FIRE DESTROYS HOUSE.

EARLY MORNING OUTBREAK. FAMILY'S HURRIED ESCAPE. I 1 ire destroyed a largo one-storeved wooden residence at Huia at an early hour yesterday morning. The building, which was near tho wharf, was owned and occupied by Mr. Robert Gordon, butcher. It was a very old structure and was at one time usefl as a farmhouse. Mr. Gordon, when awakened by smoke in his bedroom at about four o'clock, found that the greater part of tho house was ablaze. He immediately roused his wife and son and the remaining occupant of the house, a domestic servant. All mado a hurried exit from tho building, which was soon destroyed. As thero is no water supply in the district it was impossible to combat tho flames, and nothing was saved. The hoUso was covered by insurance.
