TAKANINI TRACK NEWS.
CANDIDATES FOR PAEROA. SEVERAL GOOD GALLOPS. CHIEF JOY'S MILE EFFORT. Owing to the fact that most of the tidiners are leaving to-da-y the inside grnss track at Takanini was opened for , Paeroa candidates yesterday, when the going was fast, and some good gallops were recorded. The work did not commence until nearly eight o'clock on account of a heavy fog. Timorous (Moore) beat Hauwiri (Jones) over half a mile in 49 4-ss. Timorous hit out very freely but Hauwiri did not travel quite' as well as usual. Chief Jewel (Moore) jumped away in front of Chief Joy (Jones) at the mile post, but the Ohinemuri Cup candidate was a neck in front at the finish in 1.42 3-5. It was a good gallop for both horses, the first halfmile taking 51s. the last half 51 3-ss. and the Inst six 1.16. Pateena (Jones) ran seven furlongs, the last six in 1.18 3-5. She is a lazy worker at any time and particularly so when working alone. Envoy (Leach) allowed Principal (Taylor) to lead him for the first seven furlongs of a mile, when he came on to finish in. front in 1.4 G. Principal went sluggishly at the end, but Envoy was full of running.' They ran the first half-mile in 51s, and the last in 52a.
Tea Trader (Parsons), Under a strong pull all the way, ran half a mile in 51 4-ss. This colt looks very well to undertake Easter engagements.
Imperial Princo (Mcßae) and Exaggeration (Parsons) wero sent seven furlongs with Camp Princess (Taylor), to bring them home the last five furlongs. Camp Princess finished just in front of Imperial Prince, with Exaggeration several lengths away, the full distance taking 1.29 2-5. and the last five furlongs 1.4. Exaggeration went badly, but she has done likewise before and too much notice need not bo taken of her display. Imperial Prince's effort was very satisfactory.
Cveek Gold (Parsons) and Holly Lu (McRae), ridden out, ran five furlongs in 1.1 4-u. Both youngsters worked nicely, and they should race well at Paeroa. On the plough Refresher (Jones) and Hard Words (Moore) were all out to finish on terms at the end of five furlongs in 1.2 4-5. a useful effort. Hard Words i 3 now coming on and is standing up to his work without showing the lameness that sent him off the scene last year. Royal Artist did solid work over a mile, and Speedmint and High Comedy easily ran seven furlongs in 1.3 G. All three look really well after doing plenty of recent racing.
NEW PLYMOUTH TRACK. LADY QUEX AND ORAPAI. The New Plymouth track was in excellent order on Saturday morning, when candidates for Trentliam, Paeroa and Opunake were worked. With one exception all the fast work was done on the plough, which was fairly fast. Gold Dawn went well over seven furlongs in 1.30, the last five in 1.4. Gold Dawn was stopping a little at the finish but it was a really good effort and she is sure to run a good race in the cup at Opunake. Orapai, finishing splendidly, beat Easter 1 Time over six furlongs in 1.16}, the last j three in 3Ss. Orapai is in great order and has done well since racing at New Plymouth a month ago. After the Paeroa meeting he will be sent on to Ellerslia for Easter. Royal Bengal, who is to race at Trentham, did a round at three-quarter pace in company with Green Patch. He moved very freely and has improved a lot since winning at Strafford on New Year's Day. In company with Arvada he leaves for Trentliam to-morrow morning. Lady Quex, who on Thursday galloped seven furlongs on the outside of the course proper in 1.31 4-5, was to have gone six this morning, but the boy mistook the peg and she was timed for only five. Under an easy pull she dashed over tile distance in 1.2 1-5, and did. it really well. Lady Quex has a great chance in the Railway at Trentham with 9.5, as she is every bit as well as when she won the Jackson I Stakes. She will be ridden by T. Green. On the outside of the course proper Cereal, with a fair weight up, galloped half a mile in good style in 51 1-5, without being hurried. Cereal looks like being a good proposition among the hacks at Opunake.
