WOMEN'S INSTITUTES.
Aratoro,—The Aratoro Institute, Kopaki, met at. Mrs. Gall's residence. An exhibition of attractive and useful articles made from sugar-bags was held; an outstanding article being a decorated sunshade. Mrs. Crc'sby sang, "Ye Banks and Braes," to an appreciative audience; after which afternoon tea was served. The hostesses were Mesdames Gall and Sharp.
Brown's Bay. —The institute held its monthly meeting last Thursday. Mrs. Baker was elected secretary in place of M iss King, who had resigned. Mrs. leader was elected vice-president and Mrs. Allen second vice-president. Items were given by Mrs. Baker and Mrs. Allen and a play entitled "Uncharitable Neighbours " was 'read by members. Tea was served by the hostesses (Mrs. Shirley and Mrs. Gerlach). A missionary from India, Miss Graham, gave an interesting lecturette on the customs and superstitions of the people. Tho meeting closed with the judging of a display of articles made from a sugarbag, Mrs. Gerlach being the winner.
Kaipara F'lats. —The institute recently celebrated its first birthday, and visitors were present from Leigh, Matakana, Warkworth and Tauhoa. The entertainment consisted of musical items, a recitation, songs and a short address on Kaipara Flats as it was fifty years ago, by an ex-resident. A competition was won by Mrs. L. Adolph, M'rs. Hodgeson and Mrs. Colville being second and third respectively. A bouquet was presented to tho president. Mrs. Brotte, by Mrs. Linton, on behalf of the institute. The first institute baby, Eric Adolph, was also the recipient of a present, donated by Mrs. W. W. Hill, a visitor from Auckland.
Mhtata. —Mrs. Withy presided at a meeting of the institute. A stall was held to raise funds for the federation, and a considerable sum was realised. A treasure hunt took place, and competitions and music were enjoyed. Tea was served by the hostesses, Mrs. Flannery and Mrs. Ansell.
Portland.—At a meeting of the institute it. was decided that members should collect. discarded clothing to be made into children's garments for the families of needy local unemployed. Plans wore made for collecting, cutting-out and sowing, a member offering to demonstrate the making of trousers for small boys at the next meeting. Miss Kerr was appointed delegate to tho semi-annual council meeting in Auckland. Hostesses were Mesdames Leese, Morgan and Neal. Rangiriri-Te Kauwhata.—A farewell evening was tendered to Mrs. T. Rodda by the institute. There were 70 ladies present, among them guests from the Waerenga Institute. Mrs. Fry, temporary president, presented to Mrs. Rodda, on behalf of the institute members, a beautiful painted cushion. During tho evening items were, contributed by the following: Mrs. Selak, Mrs. 0. IT. Wright, Paula Reston, Mrs. Hunter (Waerenga), Mrs. Fleming (Waerenga). An impromptu sketch was given by Mrs. 0. H. Wright and Mrs. Paul Reston.
