CHAMPION ATHLETES.

DOMINION TITLE EVENTS. fine opening to meeting. ELLIOT'S GREAT SPRINTING. SPLENDID TIME FOR QUARTER. The New Zealand amateur athletic championship meeting for 1932 opened at the Domain yesterday afternoon in fine, warm weather, with just a slight breeze blowing down the ground. There was a large attendance' of the public and this augured well for a very large crowd, when the meeting is concluded this afternoon. The outstanding features of the afternoon's sport were the brilliant sprinting of A. J- Elliot, of Auckland, who ran g 4-5s in his heat of the 100 yds. This equalled the New Zealand record and also the best time ever done in the Dominion by an athlete from overseas. There was just a-faint breeze blowing at the time and this will no doubt preclude the possibility of recognition of Elliot's equalling of the record. However, in his heat, of the 220 yds., Elliott, running against the same breeze, registered 21 4-ss, this being the best time ever put up by a New Zealander, although it was below the record of 21 l-5s standing to the credit of G. S. Simpson, of the United States, who toured the Dominion last year. .Tt will be interesting to see if Elliot is able to improve upon these times to-day. Brilliant performances were also registered in the heats of the 440 yds. by T. Pickering (Otago) and S. A. Black (West Coast), who did 49 4-5s and 49 2-5s respectively. The previous best performince by a New Zealander was 50s and the Dominion record is 49 l-ss. Here again there is » possibility of a record in the final this afternoon. The mile race saw (he present titleholder. G. Bayue, Wellington, record a splendid performance in accounting for J. W. Savidan and N. F. Cooper in 4m 255, good time for the Domain track. The other athletic events were all keenly contested, while much interest centred in the cycling races. Unfortunately, these were not free from the customary disputes and it was unfair to the riders in the second heat of the three miles championship to declare it no race through an error on tho part of the lap-keepers. The cyclists were aware of the mistake and completed another lap, only to be told there would be no placings. Competitors were present, from the 'Auckland, Wellington. West Coast (Taranaki, Wanganui and Taihape districts), Canterbury and Otago provincial areas. Following are the results: —
