HIGHWAYS COUNCIL.
MEMBERS DISSATISFIED. TREATMENT BY THE BOARD. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT. "| THAMES, Friday. Dissatisfaction among members of the No. 2 Main Highways Council in regard to the treatment the council received from the Main Highways Board concerning recommendations for new highways was referred to by the chairman of the Hauraki Plains County Council, Mr. W. Madgwick at yesterday's meeting of the County Council. He read a letter of protest fonvarded by the Highways Council to the board. Mr. Madgwick said the representatives of the various county councils felt they were simply wasting their time at the Highways Council meetings, for it seemed that their recommendations were flouted and that roads which they had not recommended wero declared main highways, while roads which, in their opinion, were urgently needed were passed over. He gave instances where it appeared to him that political action had over-ridden the merits of the case. Mr. Madgwick remarked later that at the meeting this week it had been a question whether all the members of the No, 2 Council would not forward their resignation to the Government for, as one member had remarked, they seemed to be a farce.
