HERRIES CUP CONTEST.

A SPECTACULAR FINISH.

PETER JACKSON'S FINE RUN. CONFUSION OVER PLACINGS. BY ARCHER. A spectacular finish, with two subsequent alterations of the placings by the judge, saw Peter Jackson, who was last into the straight, score narrowly from Royal Artist and Awaken in the Kerries' Memorial Cup. Awaken, whose number was at first hoisted as second, was not placed in the first four when the positions were amended, but some minutes after the race she was awarded third. Speculation was heavy, and Peter Jackson was favourite, with Pegaway and Antique also heavily supported. A good start was effected and when the field had settled down Pegaway. on tho rails, and Chief Joy wero tlie leaders from Arikira, Awaken. Royal Artist, Chief Jewel and Alloy, with Royal Doulton, Antique and King's Archer in the rear. Pegaway and Chief Joy were still the leaders along the back from Arikira, Awaken, Royal Artist, Chief Jewel and Bronze Trny. with Peter Jackson moving up into a position on the rails, where lie received a check at the half-mile and drifted back.

Nearing the lop Arikira and Awaken made n forward move and Chief Joy dropped back a trifle. Pegaway and Arikira were the leaders into the straight from Volimond, who was coming on the outside. Awaken, Bronze Tray, Royal Artist, Chief Joy and Chief Jewel, with Antique also handy and Peter Jackson last. The leaders came away from the rails, when they straightened up and Chief Joy, Chief Jewel and Antique became prominent on the inside, while Royal Artist came further out. Peter Jackson then showed up in the middle of tho track and Awaken was handy almost alongside him. It was anybody's race a hundred yards from tho post, but Peter Jackson finished on in the style of a true stayer and secured the verdict by a long neck from Royal Artist, who was placed a head in front of Awaken. Antique was placed fourth, but Arikira. wide out. Pcgayay. Chief Jewel. Chief Joy and King's Archer wero right up, and there was precious little between tho lot of them. It was a. wonderfully good race, and every one of tho first nine horses had a winning chance in tho straight. The judge inado no mistako about the winner, but he apparently had extreme difficulty in fixing the minor placings. Awaken was first placed second, then not given a place, but she. was eventually placed third, while ( hicf Jewel was lightly relegated from a place. It is certain -that there was extremely little between Royal Artist and Awaken, and tho only one in a position to separate them was the judge. However, from the writer s position on tho press stand it looked as if Awaken was second.

Peter Jackson's finishing run was full of merit, but, he was lucky in Betting a, run through, in the middle of the track when the leaders went out wide. Koyal Artist stayed on solidly and so did Awaken, who received a slight, check when Peter Jackson rolled out slightly about 50 yards from the post. Pegawov boat, himself by trying to wm all the way with his big weight and he and Arikira did not improve their prospects) when they came right away over to the outside If they had kept straight both may have been placed, as they missed by very little. Chief Joy and Chief Jewel, whose sodd o slipped, both went good races. Strangely enough, these stablemates _ hampered one another slightly in the straight, when they were locked together at the distance. Antique made a pood effort and jus weakened nt tho end, while Av>ukcu »Stis a shade unlucky. OUTSIDERS IN HURDLES. UTFOR'r A"N D PRINCII'AL. Two outsiders. Biform and Principal, filled the dividend-places in the huakuka Handicap Hurdles, for which Standfast and Cargen were the favourites. High finance led to the first fence, where she swerved right across tho field and interfered with some of the horses behind, with the "suit tluit Mia Stella fell and brought" down-l atuiahi. High Finance's speed again carried her to the front before reaching t.he second fence, but she again swerved right out. to jump the fence sideways, lifter -which she V ' Biform^hen' took tip the running from 'L'e Homai and Standfast and along tho back lie just led from Te Honnu and Luminary, with Airtight and Principal heading the others, who were stringing outL Principal and lo Homai mo\ed up a top and they led into the straight from Biform. who was clear of Luminal}" ami Airtight, with the others -I™. £ac* ., l .° have chances. . Airtight and Luminary both appeared to ha%o chances half a mile from home, but coi ld not go with the placed horses at the finish. GAINE CARRINGTON BEATEN. SEA RULER'S FIRST WIN. The Haweru candidate Gaine Carrington wa3 over twice us well backed us Sea tiuler for the Juvenile Handicap, but he was well beaten by Sea Ruler, who began better than usual and hung 011 really well when diallenged at the finish. _ Mungatoon was badly left and Sea Killer, Te Waipu and Hauwiri went out in a bunch just ahead of Cx<iine Carrington and riol.y Lu. With a furlong covered Hauwiri. 011 the rails, and Te Waipu were the leaders, with Sea Ruler, Gaine Carrington, Master Brierly and Whirlalorig following. So they raced round the home turn, where Gaino Carrington swung out slightly lo get a run. Once they straightened up Sea Ruler ran to the leaders and he just led at the distance, whore Gaine Carrington was going nicely on his quarters. Gaine Carrington was beaten, but not disgraced, nnd he had the worrit of it in having to come outside three horses to get a run. Master Brierly and Roman Mascot both finished strongly and Hauwiri made a good showing, although he weakened near the end after being bust'ed to hold his pobition 011 the rails in the first furlong. SURPRISE IN HACK SPRINT. EXAGGERATION JUST SCORES. All outsider. Next to finish were Luval, GanPal and Lucidus. Exaggeration begun from an outside posilion and hung 011 really well after being bustled up to the lead early. Nomianby finished fast and would have won in another few strides. Instalment bad every chance and faded in Gray s hands being carefully nursed for a, final effort. Luval was always prominent, but Gannat. was going great guns at the end. Lucidus wnh very slow to find his feet, und could not. go on at the end after moving very fast in tho middle stages, 4
