EXTENDING THE CITY.
EFFECT ON FINANCES. MAYOR TO MAKE STATEMENT. The possible effect upon the finances of the city of the proposed amalgamation of the boroughs of Mount Eden and Mount Albert with the city has been widely debated and there have been many requests for an authoritative statement setting out tho position of the city ratepayer in the event of the amalgamation polls being carried. Tho Mayor, Mr. G. W. Hutchison, said yesterday that in view of tho fact that the whole question was being brought before the City Council at its meeting on Thursday next by a notice of motion which sought to have tho proposal shelved for two years, lie would take that opportunity to make a statement reviewing the whole matter. Possibly this would clear np many of the points, raised by those who had shown an interest in the amalgamation proposals. Reference was also made by Mr. Hutchison to the reported statement that the City Central Progress League had written to the Auckland Chamber of Commerce seeking the assistance of the chamber in determining the position regarding the effect of the proposed amalgamations. Following that, and in response to a ' s request from the executive of the league, die had consented to receive a deputation from that body and to answer any inquiries they desired to make. However, prior to tiie time fixed for the deputation, the chairman of the league had requested that tho appointment be postponed. The information desired would be made available on Thursday evening, and if it was thought desirable that the position should bo further elaborated there would be ample time to do so before the taking of the amalgamation polls on March 9.
