HARDNESS OF WATER.
COMPLAINTS AT OTAHUHU.
CORROSION IN FITTINGS
The need for the installation of a watersoftening plant at the borough waterworks was 6trongly urged by Mr. F. W. Grey at a meeting of'the Otahuhu Borough Council last evening. Mr. Grey said he was informed that double the amount of chlorine gas was now being injected into the reservoir and this was increasing the natural hardness of the water. Considerable corrosion was taking place in hot water and ordinary fittings, this being mainly due to the unusual amount of lime being used. The Mayor, Mr. H. T. Clements, said every district using chlorinated water had the same trouble in. the way of corrosion.
The town clc.*k reported that the last advice received was that the cost of a plant to treat a supply of 4,000,000 gallons a week would run into thousands of pounds. Mr. Grey moved that the Works Committee be instructed to make inquiries ill other directions with the view to obtaining a suitable plant. The motion was carried.
