PUPILS FOR HIGH SCHOOL.

COST OF CONVEYANCE. SUBSIDIES NOW FORBIDDEN. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] I'UKEKOHE, Wednesday. Although the board of managers of the Pukekohe Technical High School has th& necessary funds, it is forbidden under recent regulations to continue to pay portion of the cost of conveying pupils to the school. Thus, at present, parents arc paying the whole cost.

This was made clear by tlic chairman, Mr. F. Ferkins, last evening in replying to a deputation from Bombay, which asked for assistance toward the cost of transporting children from Bombay. Mr. J. B. McKinncy said each of the ten pupils from that district now had to pay 5s a week. If the hoard could resume paying half, the number of pupils would increase, as some parents were unable to find the full amount.

Mr. Ferkins replied that (lie school bad lost between 40 and 50 pupils through parents being unable to find the full cost of conveyance. The board had accumulated between £2OO and £3OO which it could use toward subsidising transport. Formerly, it. paid portion of the cost of motor services to bring pupils from Bombay, Funi, Aka Mauku, Fafumahoe and Pa pa rat a and from Clevedon to Papakura station and Mangatawhiri to Pokeno Station to join the train. Pupils who came by train obtained free transport, but those living away from the railway were most unfairly penalised by tho new regulations. As tho result of representations that had already been made, he added, departmental officers were to visit Pukekohe and discuss the question. It was decided to arrange a deputation from the districts concerned to the Minister of Education the Hon. R. Masters.
