MOUNT COOK REGION. THREE PEAKS CLIMBED. Included among the mountaineering activities in the Mont Cook region this season were the climbing of two firstclass peaks by a party consisting of Dr. J. C. Bradshaw, Guide A. Brustad and Mr. Lyn Murray, of Timaru. On January 12 Aiguille Rouge, a mountain of nearly 10,000 ft., east of the Tasman Glacier, was climbed, tho Malte Brun Hut being left at 4 a.m. and reached on return at 6.10 p.m. On January 14 an attempt was made on Elie de Beaumont, but. after reaching the Lendenfeldt Saddle the party was driven back by bad weather. Two days later, however, a successful ascent was made, the summit of Elio de Beaumont (10,200 ft.) being reached at 9.25 a.m., six hours and 35 minutes after leaving the hut. Tho weather was perfect, and buildings tt the Franz Josef Glacier were clearly listinguishnble. In the other quarters, lorth, south and east, towered hundreds >f glorious snow peaks unobscurcd by a iinglo cloud. The descent was made in. ive hours, tho hut being reached at 3.30 }.m. On January 18 an attempt was made if Mount Darwin (9715 ft.), a peak which ias not been climbed for many years, ['he hut was loft at 3.10 a.m., and at 0 a.m. an altitude of over 9000 ft. was •egistered by the oneroid. A sudden liange in the weather necessitated a reurn, and from 8000 ft. the descent was nade in a snow storm, with a visibility if often only a few feet. Thanks to exellent guiding, the hut was reached safely ,t 4.5 p.m. Dr. Bradshaw now has a record of nine irst-class peaks in the Mount Cook egion.
