EXPORTS TO BRITAIN.
NEW ZEALAND PRODUCE. HIGH PREFERENCE RATIO. OVER 80 PER CENT. OF TOTAL. Since all exports from New Zealand to the United Kingdom except wool will have the advantage of the 10 per cent, duty on competing goods from foreign countries, a very high proportion of tho exports will receivo preferential treatment. In 1930. exports to the United Kingdom of New Zealand produce were valued at £35,776,492. Raw wool represented £6,172,538. The balance of £29,603,954 is equivalent to 82.7 per cent, of tho total exports. Considerable quantities of New Zealand produce are shipped to London and thenco re-exported to tho Continent or to the United States. These will naturally be exempt from tho British tariff. In 1929, the latest year for which details arc available, total exports to the United. Kingdom were valued at £40,957,043 and re-exports amounted to £7,053,435. Tho values of wool included in these figures were, respectively, £10,686,830 and £5.247,013. Hence imports from New Zealand retained in Britain were j £33,903,608 and those of wool £5,439,817. I Had the tariff then been in force, 84 per | cent, of the retained imports would have I received preferential tariff. The principal exports to the United : Kingdom in 1929 and the re-exports of | New Zealand produce were as follows ! (wool excluded): — Exports. He-exports. ! Butter, cheese and egus . . . . JC17.173.-I.TI £048,289 ; Meat . . . . 9,431.990 70,230 j Hides and slcius . . 703.040 495,313 I Fruits . . .. 419,801 I Flax .. .. 11-2.013 281,395 I The New Zealand statistics do not disclose tho proportion of imports from Britain admitted at preferential rates, but of imports in 1930 from all parts of the British Empire 73.64 per cent, had tho advantage of the preferential tariff. In 1929, the proportion was 75.5 per cent. Of imports in 1930. on which there was no preference, 52.48 per cent, was of British Empire origin ; of imports in tho categories of preferential tariff treatment, 77.31 per cent, was British.
