OTAHUHU INTERESTS.
UNPAID RATE PENALTY. STURGES PARK MEMORIAL. The Otahuhu Borough Council decided at its meeting on Thursday that the 10 per cent, penalty on unpaid rates ■will be imposed on and after March 21 rieri. This date lias been chosen to give the fullest possible consideration to ratepayers who may find it inconvenient to make payment until the last month of the financial year. The Parks Committee reported that plans had been approved of the memorial to be erected in Sturges Park to the memory of the late Mr. Alfred Sturges. a former Mayor of the borough. Work bad been commenced. The memorial will take the form of an obelisk with a drinking fountain tn the centre. Volcanic rock from the excavations in the park during recent improvements will be utilised to construct the menjorial. the object being to have the memorial in harmony with the volcanic nature of the surroundings. The project has been made possible through a grant from the trustees of the Otahuhu Rowing Club. Suggestions for the improvement of bathing facilities in the Tamaki P..iver were made by Mr. F. W. Grey. He said the upper reaches of the river were most popular and on a recent day there had been over 13) bathers at one part. Access was made through private property and he suggested the council erect a. footbridge from Xgaio Street. The Works Commit,tee was instructed to inspect the locality and take any action necessary.
