FINE WOOLS FIRM.
PRICES AT TIMARU. CROSSBRED CUPS EASIER. BUYERS EXERCISE CAUTION. [BY TELEGRAPH.—FB.ESS ASSOCIATION. ] TIMABU, Friday. The second wool sale of the season in South Canterbury was held at Timaru today. when a catalogue comprising 13.147 bales was offered to a bench of buyers which was almost fully representative of the vrool-consuming countries. Japan and America were not in the market, but otherwise competition was fairly well spread. Keen interest was taken in the sale by the public, there being a fairly large gallery throughout the afternoon. Compared with the recent Christ-church and Dunedin sales, offerings of betterclass wools were quite firm, although crossbreds were easier on Dunedin prices by from £d to j-d per lb. -This may be accounted for by the poor selection offered, most of these wools being somewhat shabby and carrying 3 fair quantity of dust. The season in some parts of South Canterbury has been veiy poor, and it was anticipated that, a number of clips would open up m dustv condition. As crossbreds were of doubtful yield, buyers were obliged to exercise a fair amount of caution. The principal competition came from the Continent, German representatives being prominent both for fleece wools and pieces. Bradford buvers came into the market for lots suitable to their requirements, and local mills operated in a similar manner. Japan operated freely at Dunedin, but there was nothing offering at Timaru which was acceptable for her. The market throughout was inclined to drag, and at no stage wa s bidding reallv spirited.
