MILL OWNERS' ARGUMENTS
[BY TELEGRAPH. —PREPS ASSOCIATION.]
CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday,
The Arbitration Court to-day reserved decision in the application of the Norti> Canterbury Threshing Mill Owners' Asso elation for a reduction in tho wages of mill employees. The present award provides for wages at the raJe of 2s an hour, and when a crop is threshed at over 100 bushels an hour, the award provides that piecework may be worked at not less than £1 3s per 1000 bushels of wheat and barley and £1 Is for oats. The mill owners are applying for a reduction to Is 9d an hour and piecework at 17s 6d per 1000 bushels for wheat or barley and 15s per 1000 bushels for oats when the crop runs 80 bushels an hour or over. Evidence in support of the application was that farmers were unable to continue to pay the present charges for threshing, and mill owners were unable to reduce them until wages were reduced.
