LIQUOR TRAFFIC.
CONTROL IN BRITAIN. COMMISSION'S SUGGESTIONS. LONDON, Dec. 20. The appointment, at handsome salaries," of five dictators to supervise the liquor traffic in Britain is recommended by the Licensing Commission. It is suggested that they be given power to order licensing benches to close many hotels and to standardise closing hours throughout the country. Among other recommendations are:— The. closer inspection of working men's clubs and night clubs, and the establishment of a higher standard of comfort on licensed premises io accustom the public to employ them as eating as well as drinking houses. Breweries would be required to contribute to a compensation fund to be used in connection with the closing of surplus public houses. Temperance reformers have submitted a minority report urging the nationalisation of breweries and hotels under a system providing for buying them out and placing them under the control of a Parliamentary body.
