Mrs. J. D. Smith, of Hamilton, is visiting Raglan. Mrs. JT. Jf. Hockin, of Hamilton, is visiting Auckland. Miss A. Frances, of Wellington, is paying a visit to Auckland. Mrs. J. R. Reed, of Wellington, is staying at the Hotel Cargen. Mrs. D. Wood and Mrs. IST. W. Coventry, of Hamilton, are visiting in tlio Raglan district. Mrs. Angus Gordon, of Crescent Road, Ono Tree Hill, is visiting her daughter in Wellington. Mrs. Edward Riddiford, accompanied by Miss Kathleen Cruickshanks, is visiting Rotorua. Mrs. G. Matthias, of Sydney, who lias been visiting Auckland, left for Wellington lust evening. Miss Molly Hall, who has been the guest of Mrs. R. S. Thompson, FairfaxRoad, Mount Eden, has returned to Wanganui. Mrs. C. J. R. Norwood, who has been visiting England, will arrive in Aucklnnd by tho Aorangi this month, and will leavo for Wellington about tho New Year. Mrs. Tancred Cooper, of Wanganui, is on a visit to Auckland, and is staying with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Thornes, at their residence, Thomcourt, Parncll. Dr. and Mrs. J. W. McTlwraith, who are leaving Wellington to take up their residence in Auckland, were entertained by tho Wellington branch of the New Zealand Educational Instituto last week. Mr. and Mrs. William Allan, formerly of Timaru, but now of Ceylon, aro visiting Scotland, where they intend spending 6o'mo time. They plan to visit tho Dominion beforo returning to Ceylon. Mr. and Mrs. Frank J. White, formerly of Taranaki and Whaugarei, who have been visiting England, aro returning to tho Dominion. They travelled by the (Jrama, which reached Sydney last week. Miss Alice Henderson, who was one of tho first missionaries to take service under the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand in India, will retire at. tho end of tho year, and will leave Bombay for New Zealand on January 1. Miss May Lynch, who for many years previous to tho earthquake had been a member of tho massage staff of the Napier Hospital, is now in Auckland, and accompanied by her aunt, Miss Susan Lynch, intends leaving in March for a trip to Britain. Tlie eleventh annual meeting of the Y.W.C.A. was held in the club rooms, Whangarei. The Rev. W. Elliott gave an address and at the conclusion of the business a musical programme was rendered. Contributing items were:—Misses Inez Reed, Joan Wilson, Nancy Wilson, Ruth Parkes, Drew, and Mrs. McCarroll. The accompanisto was Mrs. G. Woollcy. Tho Otahuhu Railway Workshops Social Club held a very successful dance in tho workshops social hall on Saturday evening. Tho hall was colourfully decorated with Chinese lanterns and streamers, while recently-installed electric fans did much toward cooling tho atmosphere. The workshops orchestra, under tho leadership of Mr. A. Smith, played excellent dance music and extras wero supplied by Messrs. Harold Halstead and Les. Jones. A monte carlo waltz competition was won by Mr. and Mrs. Carson, while tho following were successful in the lucky number competitions: —Messrs. 0 Donnell, J. Sinclair and Mesdamcs Ayres, Evans and Miss Gallagher. An "old gold" fair was held on Friday and Saturday by the Devonport Salvation Army in tho hall at Hastings Parade. The function was opened by Mr. Alec Harris, M.P. The decorations of tho stalls were particularly colourful, tho shades of gold being used with a very dainty effect. Following wero the stallholders :—Drapery, Mrs. Mann, Mrs. Foster, Mrs. Sadgrovo and Mrs. Henderson; cakes, Mrs. Parker and Mrs. Wood; ice cream and refreshment. Miss Parker; sweets, Miss Wilson and Miss Inger; produce, Mr. Foster and Mr. Parker; handkerchiefs, Miss Henderson; afternoon tea, Mrs. Watson, Mrs. Bancroft, Mrs. Redfern and Mrs. Chaplin. Tho annual At Home of the North Shore Rowing Club was held in the clubhouse at Devonport on Saturday. '1 ho president of the club, Mr. D. W. McLean, opened the function and the guests were i ('reived in the entrance way by Mrs. McLean, J.P. As tho water in the harbour was rough races were unable to be held. The ladies connected with the club served tea and afterwards the guests inspected the trophies of tho club, which were displayed at one end of tho hall. Among the many guests present were tho Mayor and Mayoress of Devonport, Mr. and Mrs. Mcikic. Tho unfurling of a flag presented by Mr. C. Seagar was a very pleasant event in tho afternoon's' programme. In Sydney at the present time is a young German artist, Miss Hilde Bodkin, who lias not only mastered the art of animal painting, but has since, turned successfully to designing * wallpapers, printed cretonnes, and is now doing portraits, mostly of children. After l.wo years of training in Stuttgart .Miss Bodkin obtained private tuition from Joseph Kerschcnstoinor, the well-known German circus and animal painter. Since then, in her pursuit of studies for her anibial pictures, Miss Boelkin has visited 15 different zoological gardens in various parts of the world. This talented girl has turned out an enormous quantity of work since 1025, having painted 60 portraits in oils and over 1000 other pictures in oils. Fortunately she has been successful in selling more than half of thcrn. A most enjoyable and largely attended entertainment was given in tlio Presbyterian Church Hall, Whangarei, on Thursday evening, when the children of the Sunday school staged an operetta entitled "Fairy Chain." Tho cast of characters was as follows: —Fairy Queen, Sheila Stewart; Prince, Joan Hope; Princess, Inez Reed; ogre, Rhoda Robertson; sprite, Aiisa Stewart; Queen's attendants, Joa.n Geissler, Jean Lornie, Ailsa Farley, and Ailsa McKay; fairies, Violet Hobbs, Ray Tebbut, Jean West, Florrie Taylor, Mary'Taylor, Mary Durham, Doreen Durham, Clem McKay, 'Mavis McKay, Shirley Drummond, Lorna Dunn, Yvonne Lilley, Joan Penney, Audrey Reed, Nola Goodison, Ina Goodison, Lorna McNaughton, Lois Wilson, Pauline Rasmussen, Audrey Going. Tlio little performers acquited themselves excellently, which reflected great credit on their teacher. Miss M. Isherwood. Mrs. Isherwood played the accompaniments.
