WORK AT TRENTHAM.

WOODVILLE CANDIDATES. HOLIDAY RACING PLANS. * LADY PAM AND CIMABUE. [from our own correspondent.] WELLINGTON, Saturday. A sharp frost at Trentham this morning put a decided nip into the air, but it was tho prelude to perfect conditions for training operations. Most of tho horses with engagements at Woodville or Dannevirke were sent along fast, the whole of the work being done on the plough, which was fash Normandy and Red Sun did easy pace work. Red Sun will not bo asked to do much yet awhile. Sir Pombal and Gay Song ran half-a-milo in 50s. Sir Pombal will be ridden at Woodville by tho stable apprentice. G. F. Dick, who will bo having his first ride in a race. Wcatherstep sprinted half-a-milo smartly by herself in 49 l-ss. She has improved by her racing at Feilding, but has no engagements until Manawatu and after that sho will raco at Wairarapa. Cape 'Royal and Rulanut took 51s for four furlongs without being extended. Rulanut has recovered from his Christchurch mishap and will raco at Manawatu. Lady Pam was lot off with an easy task. Nono of Mr. Kembatl's horses will be at Auckland. Teastream ran rn easy half in 51s. This two-year-old has been given plenty of time without strenuous racing and ho has thrived o?* it. He will bo ready for the holidays. White Squall's Half-mile. Moab Queen v. as better than Kilstar at i the end of six in 1.19, and White Squall finished clear of Volga Boatman at the end of four in 50s. White Squall will be | ridden at Woodville by W. J. McDowell. j Capetown and Foghorn registered 1.191 ; for six furlongs, the last half in 51Js. Cape- j town will be ridden at Woodville by K. ! Voitre and Foghorn by W. E. Shand. The Sun jumped one of tho schooling hurdles three times. He was disinclined for the task, no doubt on account of the ground, which is very hard. He will be ridden by A. Jenkins at Woodville. Flower finished well ahead of Royal Game ' at the end of six in 1.171, the last half in 52 l-ss. H. Pritchard will take Flower. Royal Game, Shootist and Camp to the West Coast at Christmas. Black Mint has already gone south, accompanied by Invite, and has joined the stables of Messrs. Shannon and Donnellan. Rajah and Michael Angelo ran four in 50s, Rajah going nicely, while Michael Angelo was doing his best. Rajah will , race at Woodville. wit a H. N. Wiggins up. I Lady Rene and Prince Pombal ran four. I but the latter was held back, the mare finishing in 50 l-ss. She has come on j nicely and should be ready after a race \ or two. She still has an enlarged hock as ; the result of being galloped on at the Grand i National meeting, but her rocovery has ! left no sign of unsoundness. Camp, alone, ran 535. Ephialtes Displays Dash. Ephialtes put in a couple of strong rounds of pace-work. He worked with plenty of ! dash. Ho is unlikely to be seen in the ; Auckland Cup owing to the difficulty of ! securing a suitable light-weight. The i majority of the lifjht boys have ull been ' booked for Boxing Day. Cottesmore ran five in 1.4, the last half ] in 51is and the last three in 395. He i went well and could hitve improved on the time. His next race is being keenly awaited by Trentham track-watchers. Cimabue worked with his usual dash over six in 1.19, the last half in 53}s, and was never near his best speed. lie 13 particularly well at present. His holiday racing is indefinite, but in the meantime it is unlikely that ho will go to Auckland. S. 3. Reid's team, none of which will race until the holidays, and then not until the second day at Manawatu, were given useful sprinting tasks without being sent against tho watch. Phar Lap did his usual work on the lead. He is very bright and lively. After breakfast the conditions were bright and warm and tho track faster. Solitaire 11. ran four in 495. She has shown plenty of pace in her races and will probably come right with a little more time. Autopay for Manawatu. Autopay and Portray ran four in 495. Autopay has freshened up nicely since the New Zealand Cup meeting and will be at Manawatu and is also a probable candidate for the Waiiarapa Cup. Portray is in good shape. Maypay and Red Top ran three in 335. Maypay has not grown much yet, but T. Pritchard says she is the biggest feeder in his stable. Gay Court, alone, ran five in 1.5. going nicely all tho way and finishing well. He will Tace at Woodville and will have tho services of H. Gray at a pound or two overweight. He appears to have freshened up well. J. Lowo gave tho two-year-olds Sago and Lord John a sprint over three furlongs in 375. Sago i 3 coming along in good style. A. Goodmm had Pnhu out. giving him a light task. An endeavour will be made to freshen him up for a race during the holidays and if ho does not show any signs of regaining form he will bo spelled and then prepared for hurdle racing. S. Wilson will ride Chief Savage. Flower and Royal Game at Woodville, and R. J. Mackie will bo on King Midas. _ The Riccarton contingent, comprising Gay Crest, Desert Song, Adelphi, Tout le Mond, Compris and Gustavo arrived by the ferry steamer to-day and went on to Wopdville. It is reported from Riccarton- that J. W. Jennings may make the trip to Woodville and lie on Compris, but that R. Reed will be his jockey at Auckland. GALLONS AT AWAHJNI. CHIEF COOK WORKS WELL. ROYAL BLACK AS HURDLER. [from our own correspondent.] PALMERSTON NORTH, Saturday. Awapuni will bo represented by a team of 14 horses on the opening day at Woodville and the majority were galloped this morning. Both the course proper and tho plough were in use, tho ilags 011 tho former being 30-odd feet out, while the latter was heavy with dirt. As a result times wero not particularly fast. Beaconsfield (Broughton) and Haulbowline (Reed) ran six furlongs in 1.20 4-5. Beaconsfield is in tho Wliariti Handicap at Woodville. King Colossus (Reed) and the improving hack Manawatu (Anderson) ran seven furlongs, being on terms throughout. King Colossus will again be ridden by B. 11. Morris in tho Woodville Cup. but Manawatu will not mako his next appearance until Danncvirke. Chief Line (Bell) and Whangaroa (Chisliolm) ran six furlongs on tho plough ip. 1.23 l-ss. Whangaroa. had tho advantage at. tlie close, but Chief Lino, apart from being a lazy worker, had much tho worse of the weights. Saltpot (Anderson), Lady Court (Broughton) and Jean Ladosio (Reed) wore associated over six furlongs, Jean Ladosio showed a brilliant turn of speed in tho early stages, but the other two beat her homo in 1.21, tho first, three furlongs having been covered in 40 3-ss. La Moderno (Reed) strode away from tho six furlongs post, to speed up over tho last three, to come homo in 37 4-ss. Inflation was not asked to gallop, being restricted to an easy task on one of the inner tracks. In company with Chief Cook, the two-year-olds will do their Christmas racing at Ellerslie. , Tho Chief Ruler—Dolly Fisher filly will race at Woodville under the name of Chief Marionette. Sht> has a good turn of speed and in a scamper with •Santoft and a Tea Tray two-year-old ran right away from them. Santoft, who will also raco at Woodville, is a full brother to Playground and Parkland. Blacksmith (Bell), who is always a free worker, ran six furlongs on tho plough in 1.21. Happy Hit (Reed) and Hunting Boy (Broughton) were well clear of a companion at tho end of fivo furlongs, tho last halfmile taking 511s. Neither Happy Hit nor Hunting Boy has been up very long, but Hunting Boy will race on the flat at Woodville prior to going in for hurdling. Chief Cook was doing his work nicely at the close of six furlongs on the plough with Chief Clerk and In Vain in 1.21. 11. Gray will ride both Chief Cook and Chief Clerk a t Woodville. Little fast work was attempted by the iiftcr-brcakfast workers,.but Decree Nisi and Patearoa ran five furlongs on the plough in 1.8 2-5. Decree Nisi. w'ho is on the improve, held a slight advuntago at the post. Royal Black, who is to make his debut as a hurdler at, Woodville. went a strong round 011 the plough. He has been showing proficiency in liis' jumping and might well piny a part in the finish. R. C. Miles will b© his pilot. A. McDONALD'S CONDITION. Tho many friends of the cross-country horseman Alan McDonald will regret to leorn that he lias not made the recovery from tho injuries tie received at the Grand National meeting that could have been desired. H'e has ,now. decided, to enter a hospital at Rototua for treatment.
