NOTES ON THE FORM.

PEGAWAY'S TWO RACES. SECOND AND FIRST PLACINGS. OUR PETER SURVIVES INQUIRY. The Improvers' Handicap was notable for the complete failure of the favourites. Miss Braesido nnd Arapai, and the decisive victory of Zanzibar, who recorded tho fast timo of 3.28 2-5. In doing his preliminary Bingen Bell collided with another horse and his owner-driver, W. G. Stephens, was thrown and broke his collarbono. R. A. McMillan replaced him in the sulky, and in the raco quickly took Bingen Bell to tho front, establishing a good lend until 110 broke about five furlongs from home. Bessie Parrish, who, for the first timo this season, moved away correctly, led into the straight, but Zanzibar wore her down to win by ono nnd a-qunrter lengths. Bingen Bell was six lengths away third and Mattie Herbilwyn was fourth. Zanzibar trotted faultlessly all the way and rewarded his supporters with a good doublofiguro dividend. Bessie Parrish gave her best display for a long timo and is evidently becoming more solid. Nono of the others trotted well. Freo Logan, driven by his owner, C. Moran, justified his favouritism for the Progressive Handicap by winning narrowly from Pegaway. with Worthy Cause third. Pegaway and Worthy Cause were second and third favourites respectively, so that the three best-backed horses finished in tho order in which they were supported. They virtually had the race to themselves. Worthy Cause was tho early leader, with Pegaway handy, and Free Logan, who was slow to begin, rapidly making up ground. Worthy Cauße was beaten at ths turn and Freo Logan was first into the straight closely attended by Pegaway, who issued a game challenge, but failed by a head. Worthy Cause was two and a-half lengths away third, and then came Pukemiro, Derby Fame, Lady Coronado and Taniwha, The winner's racing oxperionce stood to him in stalling off Pegaway, who made a good showing seeing that it was only the second timo he had raced. Glandore's Great Finish. There was a great surprise in the Raglan Handicap, when a rank outsider, Glandore, vigorously driven. by A. McGarry, put in a brilliant finishing run to defeat Some Dillon and pay a divided approaching tho half-ceutury. Derby Vale was favourite over Prince Pedro, and led out smartly, while Princo Pedro tangled at tho start and lost a lot of ground. Half-a-milo from homo Rolfe Audubon was in front with Soino Dillon going well in a handy position. In tho run homo Some Dillon had charge, while Derby Vale caino through arid issued a strong challenge, Rolfe Audubon also hanging on well. Glandore. who had been a long way back, then appeared on tho outside and in a stirring finish won by a neck from Some Dillon, who was a head in front of Derby Vale. Rolfe Audubon was a neck away fourth, followed by Bell Dial, Sailor Boy, Hohoro and Princo Pedro. Tho winner, who has passed through many hands, has always shown speed on the track, but has become notorious for his repeated failures and erratic behaviour in races. On this occasion he "camo from the clouds" with a rare dash; when two furlongs from homo ho did not appear to havo a chance. Kewpie's Guy was made a better favourite than Impromptu for the Waikato Handicap, the two carrying just over half tho totalisator _ investments, but the best they could do in a fast-ruu race was to finish next to tho dividend-payers. Explosion went to tho front from tho start, followed by Dan Direct and Nella Dillon, while Impromptu, going fast, was with the last-named as the stand was reached. Thero was no alteration for a mile, at which stago Kewpie's Guy raced up alongside Impromptu. Three furlongs from home Dan Direct dashed to tho front, with Impromptu, Kewpie's Guy and Torpedo Huon in pursuit. In the run to the judge Dan Direct hung 011 well to win by two lengths from, tho fast-finishing Torpedo Huon. who cut Impromptu out of second place by half-a-length. with Kewpie's Guy a similar distance back fourth. Then came Dealer. Explosion and Nella Dillon. Dan Direct was driven a confident race by A. T. Newdick, who kept him in behind Explosion for the major portion of the going, and when ho pulled him out Dan Direct put plenty of dash into the effort to win well. Impromptu and Kewpio'3 Guy both lost a littlo ground with fivo furlongs covered and were afterwards set a hard task. Splendidly driven by P. «T. Smith, lorpedo Huon finished well on the rails to get second place, registering his best performance for some time. Worthy Queen Wins Easily. Worthy Queen was an odds-on favourite for the Members' Handicap, and, going of! smoothly, was soon in tho lead and won very easily. Moko Girl was the ea.rly leader, hut with two furlongs covered Worthy Queen took command. Hue Coronado and Windchat moved up to Moko Girl, but they nil broke crossing the top. This enabled Worthy Queen to increase her advantage and she was not troubled to win pulling up by fivo lengths from Moko Girl, who was tho same distance in front of Windchat. Zanzibar, penalised to 72yds, and Black Magic wero next to cross tho line. Worthy Queen gave a sound display of trotting. Pegaway. after his good second to tree Logan in tho Progressive Handicap, was mado a warm favourite for tho Waipa Handicap, with good support for Freo Logan, who was penalised 36yds, and Prince Etawah. Free Logan went away tangling iyid before a furlong wns covered bToko up badly. Dolly Thorpe. Doneo and Pegnway wa3 tho order for tho first five furlongs, but. as they reached the stand Prince Etawah wns close to tho leaders, whilo Freo Logan was travelling fast from a long way back. At tho half-mile post Pegaway ran to the lead and turned for homo in advance of Pukemiro, Princo Etawah and Dolly Thorpe. Pegaway hod most in reserve in the run to tho judge, nnd won nicely by a length and a-half from Pukemiro, who paced a solid race. Dolly Thorpe was three lengths nwnv third, followed by Princo Etawah and Frcft Logan, whose fniluro to pn.e correctly in tho early stages cost him an undeniable chance. S. M. August, driver of Dolly Thorpe, was fined £5 for undue use of the whip. Oliver Thorpe's Success. Oliver Thorpo proved that his second to Arabond over two miles at. the Waikato spring meeting was not a fluke, by winning tho Dominion Iliindicnp decisively from tho favourite, Some Dillon. Rey do Quest, who was second choice, made tho running for ovef a mile and a-half. being attended for most of tho way by Jersey Thorpe, Lady Coronado, Myrtlene, Oliver Thorpo and Somo Dillon. When Rey do Quest retired,' Lady Coronado took up tho running and led into tho straight from Oliver Thorpe and Somo Dillon, but cmco they straightened up Oliver Thorne was in front, and. driven right out, held off Somo Dillon to win by two lengths, with Jeisey Thorpe two and a-half lengths away third. Then camo Lady Coronado, Bell Dial, Lady Yvonno and Rey do Quest. Roi Grande failed to trot away correctly and later broke up badly in tho race. Gaza, the favourite, attempted to win the Farewell Handicap from end to end, and after leading to within a furlong of tho post, wns beaten into third place by Our Peter and High Sea. Gaza began quickly and with half tho journey cpvered was attended by High Sea, Our Peter and Hohoro. Gaza was still in tho lead as they turned for home, followed by Our Peter, High Sea, Ilohoro nnd Torpedo Huon. In the final dash, Our Peter did best to win by half-n-length from tho fast-finishing High Sea, with Gaza a neck away third, and Torpedo Huon next. Our Peter was well driven by J. S. Shaw. An inquiry was held into the running of the winner, compared with his display in the Raglan Handicap, in which he wns never prominent, after being slow away from tho back-mark, and tho explanation wns accepted. NOTES FROM DUNEDIN. AUCKLAND CUP CANDIDATES. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] DUNEDIN, Saturday. Admirnl Drake and Black Duko will be in tho field for tho Auckland Cup if nil goes well. Captain's Gift will also make tho journey North. This morning Admiral Drake wns led in n good gallop over nine furlongs by Royal Saxon, and covered a mile 011 the outside of tho course in 1.48. L. J. Ellis will probably ride Admiral Drake in the Auckland _ Cup. Admiral Drako was over-raced at Riccarton and trained off, but has now freshened up again. Black Duko is also doing well, and under a light weight may ehape better than is generally expected. Nominations for tho Dunedin Summer Meeting are quite good, and should supply the basis of success much needed by the club. Pink Paper, a brother to Pink Note, has joined D. P. Wilson's stable. Royal Saxon is galloping well, but is now not reliable in a race. He has shaped promisingly in a school over hurdles, and is just the sort to make good. Admiral Drake .will bo Mr. J. M, Samspn's only representative at tho Auckland Qop meeting.
