TAUMARUNUI RACES.

FINAL PAY'S RESULTS. QUEEN/ ARPA SURPRISES. FLYING PRINCE IN FO'KM. fIVIN FOR KING WILLONiYX. A surprise win by Queen Arpa in the Maiden Handicap was iho outstanding, feature of the second day of tho Taumarunui Racing Club's meeting on Saturday QueenVArpa was supported to the extent of only £8 and returned a substantial dividend. The conditions for. jacing wer o again excellent, but the attendance, although slightly better than on the first day, was small. Four favourites were successful and an- ' other dead-heated for first, so that investors were well on the mark in most of <he races. 'However, Huntingdon's supporters showed a loss on their investments when he failed to win the Kakahi giving Handicap outright and another reverse for investors was the defeat of <he odds-on favourite Heremia, by Steady ]rj r0 in the Piriaka Hack Handicap. The chief events both provided keen finishes and Flying Frinee played a prominent part in both, as he narrowly von the President's Handicap from Cruachan and King Willonyx, who deadlieated for second, and he also deadlieated for first with Huntingdon in the Kakahi Flying Handicap. The stipendiary steward, Mr. A. P. Wilson, announced that he was dissatisfied with 11. Gray's handling of Flying Prince in the f print race and would have instituted an inquiry only for the fact that Flying J'rince got up to dead-heat for first. "Before racing commenced the judicial committee heM an inquiry into tho interference with Steady Fire in the Owhango Hack Handicap on the first day._ After hearing the evidence of several riders the / committee decided to take no action. The totalisator handled £3174 for seven races, as against £6730 10s for eight races on the second day last year. Tho total investments for the 14 races at the meetin"- amounted to £5959 10s, compared with £13,063 10s for 16 traces last year, u decrease qi £7104. • Results: — RAURIMU HACK HURDLES. [from our own correspondent.] WHANGAREI, Saturday. _ The Whangarei Racing C'lub,_ which held its spring meeting at Kensington raceCourse, Whangarei, Inst month, has found, in common with other country clubs, that Ihe fixture resulted in considerable lo:3S. A decrease in totalisator returns was the mam factor, the betting being 50 per cent, lower tha-n that of tho previous yeur. In making arrangements for the fixture, tho club considered all means of economising, and the stakes were reduced to a figure just eulhcient to entice outside owners to enter. The position is a serious one for all country. clubs, and, if the 6port is to be kept Eoing in the country, it may be necessary h>r Government assistance to be rendered , in some Way, failing which, some clubs may have to wind up their affairs.
