NOTES ON THE RACING.

HIT THE DECK'S HURDLES. SUCCESS OF STEADY FIRE. heremia' in second place. ■ BY ARCHER. With J. H. Mcßae in the saddle, Hit the Deck was a bettor favourite than Cargen for the Raurimu Hack Hurdles and ho acted right up to expectations by winning nicely from Advance Camp, who was the third fancy. Production and Carson had turns in the lead for about six furlongs, when Hit the Deck assumed command and was not afterwards headed to score by a length and a-half from Advance Camp, who finished on well from a good way back. Cargen was two and a-hnlf lengths away third and Star Lupin was fourth. Hit the Deck was an improved horse for his run on the first day and scored decisively. Advance Camp ran another solid race, but Cargen weakened at the finish after having every chance. Two outsiders. Queen Arpa and Armenia, filled the dividend-places in the Maiden Handicap, just being ahead of the favourite, Kanapa, in an exciting finish. Armenia and Queen Arpa were quickest to begin, but Queen Arpa soon dropped back last. Armenia and Kanapa then went on in the lead and they were first into the straight from Simint, Llanfyllin and Toujours. The Headers came away from the rails in the run home and Queen Arpa dashed up on (he inside to win by a neck from Armenia, who beat Kanapa by half a neck. Toujours was fourth, followed by Llanfyllin and Simint. There was only £8 invested on tho winner, who returned a substantial dividend Queen x\.rpa received a lucky run in the straight, which more than made up for the fact that her rider lost an iron in the race. Fine Finish in Handicap. Tho President's Handicap produced a fino finish between the three top-weights and the favourite. Flying Prince, just got home from King Willonyx and Cruachan, who dcadhcated for second. Lady Vane and Cruachan made moat of the running and they were tho leaders into the from Flying Prince and Limeen, with King Willonyx last. Once into tho straight Lady Vane retired and Cruachan was immediately tackled by Flying Prince, who just led at tho distance. Flying Prince then held his own to win by a hoad from Cruachan and- the fast-finishing King Willonyx, whom the judge was unable to separate. Limeen was fourth followed by Lady Vane and Abbey Queen. Flying Prince ran right up to form and so d:d King Willonyx, who came home fast after becoming pocketed at the top. where he went back last. Heremia was backed down to odds-on for tho Piriaka Hack Handicap, but, after being a little unlucky near the turn, he had to lower his colours to Steady Fire, who was most unlucky in his two races on the first day. Val Simon led early from Abbey Dream and Heremia, with Steady Fire last. King Win and Steady Fire moved up ahead of Heremia, at the top, where Heremia became awkwardly placed. Abbey Dream _and Steady Fire led into the straight from King Win and Heremia, and Steady Fire stalled off Heremia in the run home to win by a length and a-quarter. King Win was a length a'.vay third and Abbey Dream was fourth. Steady Fire deserved his success, but would have had more trouble if Heremia had not lost his position at the top. Kakahi Handicap Dead-heat, There was marked confidence about the support for Huntingdon in, the Kakahi Flying Handicap and he was over twice as well backed as the second Fancy, Flying Prince, who had a 4lb. penalty for his previous win, and was again ridden oy 11. Gray. Huntingdon, from No. 1, jumped out clear, but he had not gone a furlong before he was closely attended by Laptown and Tradesman, while Flying Prince wu3 tailing off. Huntingdon and Laptown raced across the top together and they came into the straight just ahead of Te Taone and 'iradesman, with Flying Prince closing ap. Huntingdon was under pressure at the distance and he held on just long enough to make a dead-heat with the fast-finishing Flying Prince. Laptown was a length away third and Tradesman was fourth. Flying Prince should have won outright and came borne fast after tailing of! unaccountably in the first couwle of furlongs. Lady Lulu was nearly twice as good a favourite as Waster Armour for the Ohura Hack Handicap and she duly scored. Lady Lulu led for slightly over a furlong, when she was joined by Abbey Queen and they raced together into the straight ahead of Master Armour and Cristobel. who were also abreast. Lady Lulu stayed on well under pressure and won by three-parts of a length from Cristobel, who beat tho tiling Abbey Queen by half a length. MasterArmour, the only other starter, was about two lengths away last. It was not a good field, but Lady Lulu finished resolutely and is becoming more solid with racing. A Three-hors© Race. Only three started in tho Farewell Handicap and King Willonyx was twice as well supported as tho second fancy, Marechal. The favourite justified the support by duly winning, but he had little to spare in a close finished with Tradesman and Marechal. From a good start Marechal made the running to the home turn, where King Willonyx went up on the outside and Tradesman was handy on tho rails. King Willonyx just had his head in front at the distance and stayed on to score by a head from Tradesman, who came through on the inside to beat Marechal for second by a neck. King Willonyx ran his usual honest race, but would bsrve had a more difficult task if Marechal l.t-d been ridden by a more experienced horseman. * RACING IN SYDNEY. FIRST ACRE WINS AGAIN.
