NOTES ON THE RACING.
FIRST SUCCESS OF LUCIDUS. HEREMIA WINS HIGH-WEIGHT. LAST RACE TO ROYAL RULER. BY ARCHER. It was in a novico event at Takijpuna that Biddy's Boy won his first raco and it was a coincidence that his younger full-brother Lucidus should also open his winning on the same course and in a similar class . event when he won the Melrose Maiden Handicap. The success of Lucidus was well anticipated and lie'started a good : second favourite to Star Lap, who ran a | good race, only to fade out at the finish, i Lady Derision and Regardez whipped round at the start, Lady Derision losing her rider, j Light Step was first out, but soon gave : way to Marmorate, Knight of Australia, j Star Lap and Silene. Star Lap led into j the straight from Lucidus, Marmora te and . Knight of Australia, and Lucidus finished ;• on best to win by half ! i length from , Amber Link, who came home well to beat ! Knight of Australia by a neck. Star Lap was fourth, followed by Bugle Call, Silene, Daycoma and Click Clack. The winner is very smart. Knight of Australia, Bugle Call, Tatyoon and Daycoma should all show improvement shortly. The three-year-old Heremia was over twice as good a favourite as Tarporley for the Tiri High-weight Handicap and he duly scored after being in front practically all i the way, with Principal, who had the benefit of the inside running. Once the field had settled down Pincipal and Heremia ; were together in the lead from Hit the Deck, Neil and Luminary, and there was practically no change in the leading positions until Patutahi and Neil moved up at the top. Principal and Heremia were still the leaders entering the straight, followed by Neil, Dominican, Hit the Deck and Patutahi. Heremia stayed on best to beat Principal by a length and a-half. Neil was a length away third and Tarporley was fourth. Next to finish were Hit the Deck, Dominican, Bizarro and Wiltshire. Heremia is an improver, who is going to be very useful. Principal ran his best race for some time to return a fine dividend for second. Neil and Tarporley both ran solid races and may be better suited by the longer distance to-day. Clirysology Scores. The Borough Handicap was a good betting race, with Chrysology, Yali and Paganelli all heavily backed. The inside horses, Paganelli, On Top and Vali, were smartest to begin, Paganelli leading along - the back and across the top from Chrysology and Lady's Boy, who were together, with Vali, Royal Ruler, White Wings and Cynthia N. next. Paganelli just led Chrysology rounding the bend, where Vali was showing up on the rails ahead of Lady's Boy and Royal Ruler. In a fine race home Chrysology just defeated Paganelli by a neck, with Vali a length and a-Quarter away third. White Wings was fourth, succeeded by Royal Ruler, Llanore, Lady's Boy and Sir Mond. An inquiry was held after the race concerning some crowding that took place between the placed horse 3 about 50yds. from the post. The judicial committee heard the evidence of the riders, but decided to take no action. The chief sufferer in the trouble was Vali, who was stopped when making an effort_ to get through on the inside._ Paganelli ran his best race for some time and just went under to Chrysology, who was perfectly handled by H. Gray. The Alison Cup was decisively won by Volimond, who was fourth fancy in the betting to Prince Val, Royal Doulton and Baroscope. Catoma hung at the start and the pace -was slow over the first couple of furlongs, when Prince Val was the leader. By the time the stands were reached Catoma had run up to Prince Val and tliey mad© play out of the straight to Brampton, Baroscope, Volimond and Royal Doulton. Five furlongs from home Volimond and Brampton moved up and they were in command at the top, where Catoma dropped back. Volimond led into the straight from Prince Val. Brampton and Baroscope, and Volimond stayed on well to win by a"length from Prince. Val, Baroscope was three-parts of a length away third and Brampton was fourth. Next to finish were Royal Doulton and Catoma. Volimond scored attractively and is right at the top of her form. Prince Val ran a solid race and Baroscope came home strongly after pulling very, hard m the early stages. Amnion Ba's Sister Wins. Ammon Ra's 6ister, Prolyxo, who was having her first race, was third choice to Tea Trader and Miss Linley in the Cambria Handicap and she demonstrated the possession of galloping ability by winning nicely. Prolyxo and Tea Trader were smartest away, but with slightly over a furlong covered Miss Linley dashed to the front. Miss Linley led Prolyxo and Tea Trader until near the turn,' when she retired quickly. Prolyxo and Tea Trader were together in the lead when they straightened up and Prolyxo ' finished on best to win by a long neck from Tea Trader, who defeated Whirlalong by two lengths. Miss Linley was fourth, with Holly Lu. Muscadine and Morehu well beaten.. Prolyxo is a shapely filly, who should improve a lot She won with a little in hand and should do well at her next appearance^ The Takapuna Plate was a fine betting race, with Biddy's Boy, Speednnnt and Chief Jewel best backed. Jalldy karo and Chief Jewel were first away, but Instalment, who began from the extreme outside, assumed command in the second furlong from Biddy's Boy, Chief Jewel, Persham, Monarchy and United. The leading positions were much the same until neaiing the home turn, where Instalment began to weaken and Biddy's Boy look charge to lead into t',e straight front Persham. Chief Jewel and United. Persham finished on strongly and beat Biddy's Boy .by a length, Speedmint being two lengths away third. Chief Jewel was fourth, succeeded by JalMy Karo, United. Speedfast and Ladv Vane. Persham finished resolutely and is very useful. Biddy's Boy just failed at the finish, and Sneedmirit was going strongly at the end. Chief Jewel and United botl> ran good races, although they weakened in the last furlong. Karangapai was interfered with at the start and was never dangerous. Taurua at Odds-on. Taurua was backed down to odds-on for the Ponui Handicap and he justified the confidence of his supporters by winning nicely from Paper Dart, an outsider, who returned a good price fc:: second. _ Taurua was first away, but ho was steadied after going a furlong and Reka Raurau then took charge. Reka Raurau showed the way across the top to Taurua, Vulmarie, Glenrata, Illumiuagh and 1 aper Dart. Nearing the turn Taurua headed Reka Raurau, while Paper Dart and Valmarie also moved up. Taurua more than held his own in the run home to score by three-parts of a length from Paper Dart, who defeated Moonfleet by a similar margin. Valmtrie was fourth and then came Reka Raurau. Good Idea and Illuminagh. Taurua was a class. above the o-hers and never looked like being beaten. Paper Dart and Moonfleet both showed improvement and may not be long in winning in niinor company. Moonfleet came from a long scratchings reduced the field for the Cheltenham Handicap to five, and the race provided a surprise when Royal Ruler, who was having his second start for the day, defeated the hot favourite, Tea Chat. The start was not a good one, Kincr Ford J ampin" out clear, while the outside horses lea Chat and High Comedy cannoned into one another and lost ground. -Tea Chat ran through quickly and when two fmlongs had been covered he was racing m the lead w?th King Ford, while Royal . Ruler and tt;„h Comedy were together just in beI hind So they raced to the straight where Royal Ruler came through strongly and defeated Tea Chat by a length. nigh Comedy was three-parts of a length nw..y third and King Ford was fourth. Golden Wedding the other runner was always tailed off. Royal Ruler finished very resolutely. but Tea Chat would probably have won if ho had jumped out well. CAREER OF BIDDY'S BOY. CONSISTENT BUT UNLUCKY. BY ARCHER. Thero aro few more consistent horses racing than Biddy's Boy, but he has not had the success he deserves, and has had far more minor placinga than victories. On Saturday Biddy's Boy ran his usual honest race in the Takapuna Plate, but once again ho met a horse that was just too good on the day, and lie had to be content with tecond place, a position he has filled on four occasions in special weight hack races in the last fifteen months Last season he was second in both the Champion Hack Plate and the Wynyard Plate, and 1 his season ho has a"a in been second in both the Onamp'ion Hack Plate and the Takapuna Plate., Tiie consistency of Biddy s Bos has ce.r----t-, | n ly been deserving of a better reword and it would be distinctly pleasing to see hnn land a good stake for his owners shortly. Biddy's Boy is now a four-year-old and this is his third season's racing. As a two-year-old he failed to win, but he notched four thirds, running his best race to nil that position in the Great .Northern J. ( oal. Stakes Last season as a three-year-o!d he registered two wins and seven aeccnds in thirteen starts, and this season ho .13 again doing well, ■ having notched a win. two seconds and a third in four starts. Up to the present Biddy s Boy has accounted for £1907 in stakes. Amd only for the fact that he ha 3 been unlucky 011 tho big occasions, missing several good pnzcs by° narrow margins, his winnings could easily have been much larger.
