WRITERS' CLUB.
At a meeting of the Writers' Glub held last week, an interesting talk upon "Art —What Is It?" was given by Mrs, Rybura. The president, Sirs. I. M Cluett, presided. . & As she saw it, said the speaker, art wan the interpretation of beauty to humanity, whatever medium, the artist worked in; whether it was in music, painting, sculpture, architecture, gardening, o i even making beautiful garments. Mrs Ryburn then dealt more specifically with art in relation to painting. Present-day artists, she said, were fortunate to havo so many beautiful colours at command.A few centuries ago they had only two or three, especially where water coloui $ were concerned. There were people who believed that beauty was a matter of' opinion, but she believed beauty was outside and beyond any opinion. It spoks for itself. Those caring fcr children should sere that they had lovely things around them, and lovely things to play with—not golliwogs and things that hai no beautv. . The speaker illustrated the talk with delightful water-colours of her own and Mrs. Harrison Smith's, also with art objects by Mrs. Buchanan.
