Miss Clowes, of Wellington, is visiting Auckland. Miss Otley, of Takapuna, lias left on a visit to Christcliufch. Mrs. C. H. Burgess, of New Plymouth, is staying at the Grand Hotel. Mrs. J. F. Studholme, of Canterbury, has left for a visit to the liaetihi district. Mrs. V. A. C. Crutchley is (he guest of Mrs. W. Deans, of Sandown, Canterbury. Miss K. McCartney, of Los Angeles, is visiting Auckland and is staying at the Grand Hotel. Mrs. B. 0. Roulston, of Los Angeles, is visiting Auckland and is staying at the Grand Hotel. Mrs. S. Blackley, of Wellington, is a visitor to Auckland and is staying at the Grand Hotel. Mrs. R. ,|J. Wilson arid her infant daughter are staying at St. Leonard's, Takapuna, for a short time. Miss Levy, a member of the Lyceum Club in Loudon, arrived by the lonic last week on a visit to New Zealand. Mrs. W. B. Brittain, who returned from England' last week, has taken a house at Millord for the summer months. Mrs. E. Geddis, who has been spending some weeks at Hotel Mon Desir, Takapuna, has returned to her home in Jutland Road. Miss D. K. Richmond, of Wellington, the well-known artist, is paying an extended visit to Mr. arid Mrs. Campion, at To Awamutu.
Miss Clarke-Johnson, of Hamilton, who has been visiting Christchurch, left at the end of the week to stay with Mrs. A. Niccol, of Ashburton. Mrs. Campbell, wife of Colonel M. A. H. Campbell, formerly aide-de-camp to the Governor of Queensland, is staying at tho Hotel Cargen. Mrs. A. P. F. Chapman is expected to arrive from England in January on a visit to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. H. Lowry, of Hawke's Bay. Mrs. A. E. G. Rhodes, of Christchurch, who has been spending several months in England, is returning to New Zealand by the Rangitata, due at the end of this week. Mr. and Mis. P. ,J. Borthwick, ■ of Masterton, left Wellington by the Maunganui for Sydney en route for England. Mrs. Borthwick before her mar riage was Miss Nancy Williams, of Masterton. Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Richardson, of Wellington, and Miss Valmai Richardson, arrived in Sydney last week by the Orford on their return to New Zealand from England. They will probably reach tho Dominion early next month. Lady Hedstrom has arrived in Wellington with her husband, Sir Maynard Hedstrom, of Fiji, after a tour of the northern districts. She will probably tour the South Island before returning to Fiji. Lady Hedstrom is a cousin of Sir Harold Beauehamp, of Wellington. Japanese women arc not., after all, to have equal franchise rights with men, even in local administrations, for the bill granting them votes in elections to city, town and village autonomous assemblies, which was passed by the House of Representatives in February, has just been heavily defeated in the House of Peers. This is the second time the peers have blocked the way to woman s franchise in that country. Princess Elizabeth has joined the ranks of motorists and has become an "ownerdriver." A model motor-car arrived at Glamis Castle, the power being supplied by a battery operated by a foot pedal. The Duke of York was intensely interested, and tried the new model before lie taught the Princess to drive. Ihe child soon mastered the intricacies of steering, and spent hours proudly driving round the castle grounds. Residents of Kihikihi entertained Miss 0. Quinlait, who is shortly to be married, at a kitchen evening recently. So many were the presents given her that a special conveyance had to bo engaged to convey them to her home. She was also presented, on another occasion, by the "Children of Mary" in connection with St. John the Baptist Church, Kihikihi, with a large and beautiful statue of the Madonna and Child. Gift afternoons were given by Mesdames Petclicll and Wilson, at To Awamutu, and a "bathroom" evening was organised by Miss Lees, of Kihikihi, and Miss Quinlan.
