VAIN RESCUE EFFORTS. DROWNING OF COMPANION. [BT telegraph.—press association.] NEW PLYMOUTH, Thursday. Heroic attempts by twin brothers, Arthur and Laurie Lehndorff, aged 14, to rescue a companion from drowning were related at the inquest on Clifford Stanley Hansen, aged 9, who was drowned in the surf at (he mouth of the Waitara River. , The tide was out. Hansen stepped in to a deep hole scoured out by recent floods. His two companions rushed to his assistance and struggled with hirn for some time. They had almost taken him to safety when the swiftly changing current caught them and swept Hansen out to sea. The two boys searched in vain for him. The body was washed up two hours later. .Arthur Lehndorff is champion swimmer of his school and winner of the Herbert Smith Trust Cup.
