EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD. THE TRIAL OF TE WHITI. The following are extracts from the New Zealand Herald of November 14, 1881 Te Whiti and Tohu were brought down from the gaol to the courthouse in a cab, states a Press Association message from New Plymouth, dated November 12. Hiroki was handcuffed and marched down on foot, and on being brought into Court was put in the prisoners' dock. Te Whiti and Tohu were allowed to sit on the floor of the courtroom, facing the Bench. Hiroki was first charged with the murder of McLean, cook of the survey party, and the warrant was read and translated to him. He was remanded. After Hiroki had been removed from the dock and marched under escort to the gaol, Te Whiti was tried under the information of C. W. Hurstliouse that he (Te Whiti) had on certain days named used language that was likely to disturb the peace of the district. The information is of great length. The case is proceeding.
The subscribers to the Auckland telephone exchange now number 42. All the connections are not yet completed. A number of additional telephones was expected to arrive by the Albion, but as no Wellington cargo was taken bv her on her trip to Auckland, they were left behind to come on by another steamer. It is officially announced from London that the Governor of New Zealand, Sir Arthur Gordon, will visit England early next year.
