QUEST FOR MINERALS.
THE PEGASUS DISTRICT. PARTIES OUT PROSPECTING. Two parties of men are at present engaged in prospecting, with Government assistance, in the Pegasus district, states the Stewart Island correspondent of the Southland News. Ihi.s part of Stewart, Island has always shown plenty of indications of gold, tin and other minerals, and it will he interesting to see the result of systematic search. For some years two men were engaged in gold-mining at Pegasus in the, creeks, and made a fair living with the gold and stream tin they obtained. It would appear that if miners were content with a modest return of about £3 a week a man, with a chance of striking richer returns, it would be feasible for several men to engage at this mode of making a living. Some two years ago an Island resident who had been roaming about this area became bushed, but wnen he finally returned he brought back a fair-sized piece of pure tin, which he had broken off a face of rock just about dusk. Although he tried to mark the spot, tho similarity of the country defeated the several subsequent efforts to find the exact place. He stated that there seemed to be a considerable, quantity showing at the place, which had become exposed through a small slip of earth and rock. It is hoped that the present parties will find the whereabouts of this tin, as it has always been reckoned that there must be a good lode, somewhere, owing to the amount of stream tin found in the creeks there.
