CHARGES OF BOOKMAKING.

ACTIVITY IN TARANAKI. THIRTEEN ARRESTS MADE. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] NEW PLYMOUTH, Thursday. Arranged under instructions from Inspector S. Rawle, of New Plymouth, and with the co-operation of Detective A. B. Meiklejohn, an organised police raid on alleged bookmakers in Hawera, Stratford and Eltham took place yesterday, 13 arrests being made. The police made their surprise visits in pairs. Several persons alleged to have been conducting premises as common gaming-houses were arrested, together with others found on the premises at the time of the raid. At the Hawera Court a charge of keeping a common gaming-house in tea-rooms was preferred against Thomas Henderson Teesdale, and a charge of assisting in the management of a common gaminghouse was made against . William Elder, shop assistant. Charles Cullinane, barman, was charged similarly with keeping a common gaming-houso in the private bar of a hotel, and Samuel Pivac, restaurant keeper, was charged with keeping a. common gaming-house in his restaurant. Charles Francis Taylor, Charles Zinsli, George William Brogden and Peter Tewaka were charged with being found in a common gaming-house without lawful excuse. The accused were not asked to plead, but in each case Detective Meiklejohn applied for a remand until November 13. The applications were granted, bail being allowed. Teesdale, Elder. Cullinane and Pivac were released on their own surety of £IOO and one other of .£IOO. Brogden, Zinsli, Taylor and Tewaka were also released on bail in their own recognisance of £5. At Stratford, where six members of the police were engaged in the raid, William Last, Felix Pobrica and Dominik Sisarich were arrested and charged with engaging in the business of bookmaking. They were remanded until November 16. bail hping fixed at £IOO, with one. surety of £loo° Walter Ernest Watkins was also arrested and charged with being found in a common gaming-house at Sisarich's premises. He was also remanded on bail of £5. At Eltham. Antonio Novak was arrested and charged with carrying on the business of bookmaker. A remand until November 17 was granted, bail being allowed in self £IOO and one surety of £2OO.
