CHAMPIONSHIP ROWING

REGATTA AT HAMILTON.

OBJECTION TO THE DATE. SOUTHERN ATTITUDE CRITICISED. The action of tho Wellington and Wanganui Rowing Associations in refusing to support the holding of the New Zealand championship regatta at Hamilton before January 31 was criticised at a meeting of the Auckland Rowing Association last evening. The objections were based on the nature of the course. "I think this is a very unsportsmanlike attitude for these two associations to adopt, because the nature of the course does not enter into the question of the date to be fixed," said Mr. E. H. Buckler, secretary of the association. "They aro simply taking advantage of tho letter of tho law in order to ventspite on the Auckland Rowing Association," said Mr. H. Reston. Mr. YV. A. Wilkinson said that since tho course at Hamilton had been buoyed off, it was a much fairer one, and it had the merit, unlike those of both Wanganui and Wellington, of being .a smooth water course. "They apparently do not realise (hat, even although they may object successfully to the earlier date, wo intpnd holding the championships at Hamilton this year at some time or other," said Mr. J. K. Hunn, who moved that that fact be communicated to the Wellington and Wanganui Associations. The motion was passed unanimously.

Mr. Buckler stated that if (he association was forced to hold tho championships at. a much later date, there was every chance that tho interprovincial eights would not be held this year. Arrangements wrro completed in connection with the official opening of tho rowing season on November 21 by the Mayor, Mr. O. W. Hutchison. Trials will bp rowed in the following order:— Waitemata, North Shore, Auckland, St. George's and West End. As soon as the representative crews have been selected the Barratt Cup will be decided. The request, of the Mercer Rowing Club to have, (he maiden pair and junior pair championship events included in its regatta programme on February 27 was granted.
