In the case, of Government and other redeemable securities the return includes redemption. 111 calculating the returns on shares in companies which pay their dividends outside New Zealand exchange rates, being liable to fluctuations, have not been taken into consideration. DAIRY PRODUCE MARKET

WEAKENING IN PRICES. COMPETITION FROM AUSTRALIA. Cabling its New Zealand house, W. Wed del and Company, Limited, state that after a month of steady values for New Zealand butter on the London market, the decision at the, British election resulted in a strengthening of the market and a general wave of confidence in practically ail trades. The benefit, so far as butter was concerned, had been offset by cheaper offerings of Australian butter and now the market was weakening on that account. Australian was being freely offered for November shipment, at 105s c.i.f.e. Supplementing its principal's report., A. 11. Turnbull and Company, Limited, states that the demand for butter was somewhat quieter and most of the larger buyers were only operating from hand to mouth. There had been very little forward inquiry during the past month, although some buyers had been available at around about Is f.o.b. for NovemberDecember shipment. The stock position of New Zealand butter in London was satisfactory, but the estimated arrivals during November-December and January showed an increase of about 4000 tons over last year. It was hoped that the additional quality would be absorbed without any great weakening in prices. The cheese market hacl" been fairly steady throughout the month, and that had been assisted by the fact that Canadian offers had been on a much higher level, due to the exchange position. The quantities of cheese afloat had been below normal and estimated arrivals during No-vember-December and January would be about, 3000 tons less than for the 6ame period last year.

The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, has received the following cablegram from London, dated November ll:—Butter, 114s to 116s. The market is very slow. Cheese: White, 67s to 68s: coloured, 66s to 675. The market is steady.
