POPULATION INCREASE.
GAIN OF 21,500 IN \l MONTHS. STATISTICIAN'S ESTIMATES. [BV TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, Thursday. According to a return published in the Gazette by the Census and Statistics Office, the estimated population of the Dominion on September 30, including Maoris, was 1,516,128, comprising 773,977 males and 742,151 females. The estimated total population of the Dominion and its dependencies (Cook Islands, Niue and Tokelau Islands), and the mandated territory of Western Samoa, was 1.578,174. The population of New Zealand proper, excluding Maoris, was 1,447,278, and the Maori population, 68,850.
Following is a summary of the official estimates of the Dominion's population, including Maoris, but excluding the island dependencies, at September 30 of recent •years, showing the increases from year to year:— Total.
