ARTILLERY TRAINING.

LIVE SHELL PRACTICE. BIVOUACS AT ROTORUA. The first of the series of bivouacs which, for reasons of economy, have been substituted this year for the usual annual camps of territorial units, will be held at the end of this month, when the 18th and 20th Batteries, New Zealand Artillery, will carry out, their four davs' period of training. In order to use the artillery range, the batteries v ill proceed to Rotorua. as usual, and live shell practice will be carried out on two of the four days.

Tho ,18th (Medium) Battery, which is under (lie command of Lieutenant J. G. Stewart, is armed with 60 pounder guns, the heaviest mobile guns in NewZealand. For their live shell practice they will have the assistance of an Air Force machine piloted by SquadronLeader L. M. Isitt, for observation purposes.

The 20th (Light) Battery, under the command of Major 11. P. Warnock, is armed with 3.7 in. howitzers, drawn by two ponies in draught. These weapons are the latest "close-support" weapons of the British Army, their mobility and inconspicnousness enabling them to work well forward in support, of infantry.
