SENSATIONAL RUNNING.
OEFEAT OF LORD BURGHLEY. The two most sensational evont3 at the recent English amateur athletic championships were easily the 880 yards flat and the 440 yards hurdles. In the half-mile there was a rush to gain the lead at rhe first hend that ended in an ugly mix-up. Peltzer was pushed right out and badly spiked. He fell back last and looked out of the race. Those not hampered made the pace strong, but Hampson, who had also been slightly soiked, and Townsend, the Cambridge Blue, quickly got into their stride. At the bell Townsend took the lead from Hampson and 300 yards from the tape liampson went to the front, while Peltzer moved up to third place. In spite of a determined challenge Peltzer could not catch thi) Englishmen, Hampson winning brilliantly in lm 54 4-sa. In the hurdles all eyes were on Lord Burghley, who had already won the 120 yards event and equalled the British record. Facelli, the Italian champion, was all nerves. However, he got away at a great pace and soon led. Lord Burghley was level at half-way and entering the straight was just ahead of Facelli. Over the last 100 yards, however, Facelli was the stronger and won by three yards from K. Areskoug, of Sweden, who had come up very fast to head the Englishman by a narrow margin.
