AMATEUR ATHLETICS.
MEETING ON LABOUR DAY. The announcement that a full athletic meeting will again be held in Auckland on Labour Day will be received with much satisfaction by local athletes. Last year only cycling under the control of the Mamikau Club and the professional body was held, but on October 26 this year there will be a full programme of events from the 100 yards maiden handicap up to a two-miles steeplechase. Besides this the usual hurdling and jumping events will be held and also a number of cycling events for members of the amateur cycling clubs. At this meeting in past years _ many well-known athletes have made their first appearance and no doubt at the coming meeting there will be a lew SUrpriSGS 111 the results. The harrier season in Wellington is still in full swing and last Saturday the annual Vosseler Shield contest took place over a difficult ten-miles course. There were 33 starters, representing five clubs. Sinclair, Silver and Campbell led at the gun.' but after three miles Stevens was leading Prosser and Silver, although at eight "miles Silver suddenly went to the front. Stevens soon displaced him and won by 140 yards, with Sinclair 15 yards away "third. Prosser was fifth, two minutes behind Stevens, who scored his fourth successive victory in this event. The first three to finish all belong to the Scottish Club and were members of the Wellington team in the two last New Zealand championships.
