RELIEF WORK.

Sir, —There are two outstanding problems in the country to-day, unemployment and primary produce prices. The farmer, unable at the present-day prices to pay wages for labour, still has much necessary work urgently requiring completion. The land, especially Crown land, could be inspected by rangers, loans granted on very easy terms, and perhaps subsidised for definite improvements, such as draining, clearing, etc. A party of men could be sent to undertake each work by contract, with tents and tools, perhaps cook and foreman, during the summer months Money thus used would mostly be recovered after increasing the output of a farm, giving work to unemployed, and indirectly to merchants and tradesmen. X.S.
