AN HONOURED PIONEER.

Sir, —I read in the Herald of September 16 of the honour done to the late Alfred Cornyns by naming one of the peaks of the Southern Alps Comyns Peak. The late Alfred Comyns did .good work in the early development of Canterbury. He had a great genius-for exploration. He led the first party through the unexplored and almost inaccessible Mathias Pass from Canterbury to Westland in the early 80's. He had a quiet, unassuming manner, was a leader of men. loved, trusted and honoured by all who knew him, and by hundreds who came under his supervision on the sheep stations in Canterbury. He passed away in September, 1921, while on a visit to Raglan, and was laid quietly t.o rest on the shores of the Tasman Sea, where a stone also bears his name. Snowden.
