ELLERSLIE TRAINING.

NASSOOK'S HURDLES CHANCE.

LAMENESS OF MALAHAT. VALROE TO START TO-DAY. Very little fast work was done at Ellerslie yesterday mornihg, moat; of the horses with engagements near at hand having completed their preparation on the previous day The aand and tan tracks were in popular demand. half and three-quarter pace-work being the general order. On number three grass track, which was in fine condition for galloping, View Halloo was Bprintoed half a mile, running the last three furlongs in 39 I-5s The three-year-old moved very nicely indeed and he looks like developing into a smart performer this season View Halloo is engaged in both the Avondale und Great Northern Guineas, but he was not nominated for any other events at the two meetings. The Fordell colt is liable to improve considerably on his third to Croupier and King Colossus in last week s Wanganui Guineas, and whi'a it may be expecting too much of him to beat Bronze Kagle and Croupier, nevertheless, he is sure to run well in the classics. Nassock, who is engaged in the Hurdles to-day. sprinted four furlongs easily in 53 4-53. The chestnut is very torward and should run prominently in the company he will be called upon to meet, especially as the logical favourite. Land Measure, will not be a competitor. Nassock has held out some promise as a hurdler, in spite of the fact that in his five outings over the sticks he has registered a second and il thud, both moderate performances Chief Link and Silvermine were again Jet off lightly, being worked at a good halfrace on the tan Silvermine appears to be moio forward than bis companion. Peter Jackson was also sent half-pace on the tan his slablemale, .he two-year-old Splutter, being restricted to cantering on the track confined to the youngsters. Splutter is a nice-looking, well-proportioned tilly by Tea Tray from Impediment, and before sho left Hawera for Ellerslie. she defeated Divola in a four-furlong sprint, after the latter had made a favourable impression at the parade at the Taranki Hunt meeting. Splutter was not entered for the Avondale Stakes, but she is eligible for tiext Saturday's Welcome Stakes at Ellerslie. In the meantime the filly may be given her nrst race in the Nursery Handicap at Avondale on Monday. The hurdler Land Measure is still sore in front and she will be allowed to foifeit her engagement in to-day's Kiuffsland Hurdles. This is unfortunate for her connections, for she appeared to have a gecond-to-none chance this afternoon. However, -Land Measure is young as hurdlers go. so that her chances will come later. The hurdles field to-day will be reduced considerably, ior in addition to Land Measure. Kouvanui is not to start, for he Fevered a tendon Inst Saturday. and this means several weeks in tlio paddock. ~,, .. After galloping so well at Ellerslie on Thursday morning Malahat was lame, having knocked himself during the try-out He was worked twice round on the sand at halfpace yesterday and he did not hit out with his customary freedom The trainer of Malahat is not inclined to view the mishap seriously, however, and it is hoped that the disability will not affect him in the big race this afternoon. The Avondale Cup candidate. Valroe, is now expected to take his place in this event to-day, in which he will be ridden by R. W. McTavish. After working on the tan on Thursday "Valroe was a bit sore, but he was sent twice round again yesterday morning and walked away apparently quite 60und. His trainer, R. J. Maleer, staled yesterday that if the Avondale course was favourable, and not hard, hi 3 horse would be allowed to take his place in to-day's field. Gay Cockade was pulling hard when sent out to sprint at Ellerslie yesterday morning, and it is this tendency that has brought about his defeat more than onre in his last few outings. He has been working exceptionally well at headquarters and will not be lacking •in condition in the Avondale Cup.

CHANGE OF QUARTERS. GOLDMAN AT OTAHUHU. Some time ago 11. Medley decided to retire Goldman from the rare-truck nnd tlie old fellow was enjoying a good spell in a well-pastured paddock. Finally Medley cave liirn away to a son of (I Paton, the Otaliuliu trainer, and the one-time smart performer in back on the track and is infusing plenty of dash into short sprints. The Otahuhu trainer has also taken the novice trotter Billy Franz, who was formerly trained at Epsom, under his charge. Billy Franz was in splendid condition when he changed quarters and ia ready to undertake more serious work to fit him for racing. Paton is also getting Gold Realm ready for immediate engagements, and tho sister to Gold Sovereign is making appreciable advancement in her preparation. When Gold Realm learns to race solidly she will pay Iter way.
