WOMEN'S INSTITUTES.
Birkdale.—Mrs. Can- Smith, of the Auckland Hospital Auxiliary, addressed members on the work of the auxiliary and afterwards exhibited many usetul garments made from apparently worthless articles. The roll-call, a collection of linen for the St. John Ambulance, received a good response. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs. Hev.son and Mrs. Jefferv.
Hobsoriville. —The September meeting was held recently, Mrs. W. Sinton presiding. The Auckland federation remits were discussed, and Mrs. W. Sinton and Mrs. R. Bright were appointed delegates to the federation meeting in October. Mrs. Bishop, of Birkdale, gave a demonstration cf dressmaking. Ihe hostesses were Mis. B. Smith and Mrs. Abrahams.
Huntly.—'The Huntly Institute held its first biithday evening on Wednesdaj when tile members and friends were entertained to a most enjoyable evening. The birthday cake was made and presented by .Mrs. George Chisholm. Aftei the secretary had dealt with the reports the social portion of the programme was opened with a duet, which was sung by Mrs. T.. Gliisholm £nd Mrs. J. Games, dancing and competitions followed, the latter being won by Mrs. 1. Chisholm, Mr. J. Rumney, Mrs. b. Liddle arid Mrs. Fleming. A very successful cake and candy stall was held, which was in the charge of Mrs. T. Hall and Mrs. F. Hanley. Supper was served, the hostesses being Mesdames E. and J. Tait, assisted by several members ot the executive.
* Omaha and Paluri.-At the monthly meeting; of the institute Mrs. .rHarper contributed pianoforte solos and Mrs. White gave a vocal item, which were much appreciated. A musical competition was won by Mrs. Wahlen Mrs L. \\ yatt was in charge of a stall. A daffodil competition was won by Mrs. Morley, with some very fine blooms. Mrs. Gozar gained second prize and Mrs. I. YVyatt third prize. Afternoon tea was dispensed bv the hostesses, Mesdames White, Neeley, Woodcock and J. Torkington. Oparau.—A meeting was held at the Oparau Hall recently, and several new members were enrolled. Miss Sandilands crave a demonstration of smocking, which was much appreciated. Afternoon tea was provided by the hostesses, Mesdames Schreiber, Atkins, Misses Sandilands and Carpw. Paengarou. —The institute held its monthly meeting recently and much interest was taken in the discussions, ihe situation of a rest room in Te Puke and a proposal to hold a Haliowe en night on October 31 were discussed. Two delegates were appointed to the Matata conference to be held shortly. A paper on the PanPacific League was read by Mrs. McCarthy, and was much appreciated. A competition. **Th© most useful articl© made .-at of a flour bag," was won by Mrs. Itiddell, with a child's pink frock. A lecture on "Daffodil Growing," by Mr. Witheford, was enjoyed. Specimens of tvpical blooms were shown as examples. Hostesijfis for the afternoon were Mesdames Mundt, Seal and Matthews. ,
