GREAT DAY RECALLED.
SIR G. GREY AS GOVERNOR. It was a great day in Auckland when. 70 vears ago, on September 26, 1861, Sir George Grey returned to the colony from South Africa to take up office as Governor. N"ew Zealand was facing grave difficulties with the Maoris at that time, and the advent of Sir George, who had shown such skill and understanding in his dealing with them, was eagerly awaited. Sir George reached Auckland in H.M.S. Cossack after a journev of 41 days from the Lape of Good Hope, and. when it was known that he was coming ashore the town gavo itself up to holiday to welcome h.m. Shops, were shut and citizens flocked to Albert Barracks to see the riflemen assemble. Bv 2.00 p.m., when the Governor disembarked, "the whole of Auckland was alive from Queen Street wharf to Albert Barracks." A guard of honour composed olf the Artillery Engineers, the 65th Regiment and the Rifle Volunteers, was in attendance at the landing and accompanied His Excellency up Shortland Crescent.
