THE PRICE OF BREAD.

FIXING MINIMUM RATE.

NO DUTY OF THE GOVERNMENT.

[BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, Wednesday. No hope of the Government fixing the minimum price for bread was held out by the Minister of Industries and Commerce, the Hon. R Masters, when replying to a deputation from the New Zealand Master Bakers' Association. The Minister said all business people were suffering at present owing to the depression. The fixing of the price of bread had never been the policy of any Government. It was the duty of the Department of Industries and Commerce to watch the position as far as the maximum price was concerned, but fixing minimum prices was a different matter altogether. He understood that as a lesult of the alteration in the sliding scale of wheat duties, there would be a reduction of £2 18s in the price of flour and that would permit of a reduction in the price of the 41b. loaf of one penny. He said the matter would be carefully considered and a reply forwarded to the deputation.
