CHAIRMAN RE-ELECTED.
POLL AT MOUNT ROSKILL. VACANCY ON ROAD BOARD. The by-election on Saturday to fill the vacancy on the Mount Roskill Road Board, caused by the retirement of the chairman, Mr. C. M. McCullough, who forfoitcd his seat because he had voted on the question of installing a telephone in his house, resulted in his return by a majority of 358 votes. Mr. polled 879 votes and his opponent, Mr. A. E. Playle, 521, the poll being a heavy one. Mr. McCullough led his opponent at each of the six booths.
Great interest was taken in the election by tho ratepayers, as sineo Mr. McCullougli's retirement the remaining eight members of the board have been divided 011 the question o< electing another chairman, and an appeal was made to the Minister of Internal Affairs. At tho last meeting Mr. R. Sanft presided, but his appointment was for only one meeting. At the first meeting after tho election a permanent chairman will bo appointed.
