RESTORING THE PUMPS. WORK PROCEEDS SMOOTHLY. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.! WHANGAREI, Saturday. It is expected that sufficient pumps will have been placed in position in "Wilsons' Co-operative Collieries at Hikurangi by Monday afternoon to control the water which will continue to rise until then. On Tuesday it is anticipated that sufficient pumps will have been restored to enable the unwatering operations to proceed rapidly. About 80 men will be employed on Monday working in four shifts of six hours. All the operations connected with the restoration of the mine to normal conditions are being carried out smoothly. Semple, M.P., in an interview to-day on his return from Hikurangi. He said he and his colleagues, Messrs. W. E. Parry and H. M. Rushworth, M.P.'s, had been specially thanked by the deputymayor of Whangarei on behalf of the district for the efforts that had been made to have work started in the mines again. Had the mines been clcsed down there was no doubt that the town of Hikurangi would have been ruined. The business people had expressed gratitude at the settlement.
