REBATE ON RATES.

UNOCCUPIED DWELLINGS. OBJECTION TO WITHDRAWAL. A 6trong protest against the proposal to repeal section 69 of the Rating Act, 1925, which enables the City Council to grant a refund of half rales where buildings coming within the section have been unoccupied for six months, was voiced by the Mayor, Mr. G. W. Hutchison, at the meeting of the City Council last evening. In moving that the Minister of Internal Affairs be informed that the council objected to the proposal, Mr. Hutchison 6aid the purpose of the Rating Amendment Bill now before the House apparently was to rescind section 69 of the Act altogether, thereby taking away from owners of dwellings the right of a rebate on rates, the same as had happened to the owners of shops. It seemed to him that the ratepayers already had sufficient difficulties, and the rebate was not too much for them to expect. He was strongly opposed to the withdrawal of the rebate. The resolution was carried.
