MEETING OF SURGEONS.

AUSTRALASIAN 'COLLEGI::.

NEW ZEALAND FELLOWS

CONFERENCE IN AUCKLAND

New Zealand Fellows of the Royal Australasian College of. Surgeons assembled in Auckland yesterday for their annual meeting, which will conclude to-day.

A full programme of work is being carried out, and includes demonstrations of methods of diagnosis ahd treatment in all branches of surgical work by the Auckland Fellows. On the scientific side the pathologist and the radiologists of the Auckland Hospital have provided interesting collections of material. A business meeting took place yesterday, and in the evening the Auckland Fellows entertained the visitors to dinner at the Northern Club. Sir Carrick Robertson presides over tho meetings, with Sir Donald McGavin, of Wellington, as New Zealand sectrstary. The college was founded in Dunedin in February, 1927, after a number of preliminary negotiations. The late Sir George Syme was elected president, with Sir Louis Barnett and Sir Alexander MacCormick as vice-presidents. The closest possible co-operation with the Royal College of Surgeons of England has been a desire of the Australasian College from the beginning, and early in its career it received an appreciative address from the senior body. In December, 1930, it was learned that His Majesty the King had been graciously pleased to approve the prefix "Royal" to the title of the college, and shortly after a grant of armorial bearings, crest, supporters and mott<)> was made by the College of Heralds. The English college has presented a mace exactly similar to that used at the college in Lincoln's Inn Fields. It is to be presented personally by Mr. C. H. Fagge, a surgeon to Guy's Hospital and vice-president of the English college, in March, 1932. Among the objects of the college are the cultivation and maintenance of the highest principles of surgical practice and ethics. Arrangements for post-graduate surgical training and the improvement of hospitals and hospital methods come within its scope. It also publishes a journal of surgery, promotes research work, and aims at bringing together the surgeons of Australia and New Zealand periodically for scientific discussions and practical demonstrations.
