AMATEUR BILLIARDS.
AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIP. ROBERTS DEFEATS KNOWLES. The Auckland provincial amateur billiards championship for tho Billiards, Limited. Shield, was oontinued last evening at Meß3rs. Billiards, Limited's, showroom, when E. V. Roberts, and New Zealand champion, was opposed by I. E. Knowles." Tho game, which was witnessed by a largo gathering of enthusiasts, resulted in a win for Roberts, who played well toward the latter end. Robertß soon got going and at hia third visit to tho table compiled a run of 20. His opponent improved upon this immediately afterwards, amassing 38. A further run of 27 by Roberts resulted, and he reached the century mark first, but there were not many points between them. Roberts improved his position with a break of 49, At the twentythird cue the scores were 184 to 103 in Roberts' favour. _ 4 Knowles then made a determined effort to reduce this lead, and, playing well, compiled breaks of 39. 39 and .29 in consecutive visits to the table. however, was not idle., and he made runs of 20 and 28 in reply. He dominated the game from ■this stage, and played attractively in registering several broaks over the 20 mark. He had no difficulty in running out a winner by 172 points. The final scores were:— F, V. Roberts, 600; breaks of 2fi, 27. 49, 20. 28, 22, S3 21, 47 and 23. I. E. Knowles: 32«: breoks of 38. 39. 39. 29 and 20. M. D White will play H. Terry to-night.
