DRESS-CUTTING.
THE McCABE ACADEMY. A free demonstration of dresscutting by Mrs. G. L. McC-abe, principal of the McCabe Academy of Dressmaking, of London, Sydney, Wellington and Auckland, was given in the concert chamber yesterday afternoon and attracted much interest. By means of a ruler marked off \nto six proportions all the cutting was done and the work resolved itself into what, might be called a simple sum of addition and subtraction, with a certain amount of adjustment carried into effect. By means of the ruler Mrs. McCabo cut patterns for children's frocks, for a blouse, a frock for a woman and patterns for skirts, sports and other wear. A costume was cut out on the stage according to the system described by Mrs. McCabe, fitted together by her assistants and exhibited upon her' person toward the end of the demonstration, the result meeting with the appreciation of the audience. Mrs. McCabe claimed for the. system simplicity, snreness of fit and an adaptability that adjusts itself to every vagary of fashion and every type of figure, and particularly is it helpful in making for the out-size figure. The science of the armhole, which many amateurs have found a stumbling block, was clearly outlined by the speaker and other knotty points simplified. Hip-yokes, flares and panels were demonstrated, also different types of collars, with helpful hints as to bias and other important points. The < children's patterns were particularly simple and attractive.
