THE VOLUNTEER FORCES.
INFLUENCE OF OFFICERS. " Tho power to do good in the hands of officers of territorial regiments is beyond description," declared Captain A. P. Hopkins at a reunion in Christchurch. "These powers do not extend only to making the trainee a soldier, but also to making him a sport and a man. Officers in the new territorial units should remember that they can influence their men in other work besides military activities." The speaker said that he was extremely glad to see a military force organised again on a voluntary basis. There were many ways, such as national emergencies like earthquakes, in which sucli a force could be extremely useful. "To imagine a country without a force at all is unthinkable and damnable," he said.
