REDUCED RELIEF GRANTS.
NORTHCOTE UNEMPLOYED.
FREE DISTRIBUTION OF MEAT.
Reporting <o the North cote Borough Council last evening on the effect of the reduced grants for unemployment relief the Mayor, Mr. R. Martin, said the position had been anticipated. About four weeks ago he had advised the Unemployment Board that the smaller allocation would mean fewer men being employed full-time, and the borough had been granted additional money. In response to later requests, however, the board had advised that it had no funds for higher grants, and the council should give preference regarding relief work to necessitous cases. The position in North cote had been temporarily relieved this week, as fewer men had sought work, but itwould probably be necessary later to ration work among the single men. Mr. Martin said there were no cases of starvation in Nortlicoto, as the relief committee of tho Auckland Hospital Board was distributing meat weekly .to Northcote families approved by the council.
