TIRED UNEMPLOYED.
OBJECTION TO A WALK.
Misconduct on the part of certain unemployed workers at the Isleworth Settlement was reported to the Ashburton Unemployment Committee last- week by the Ashburton County Council engineer. The report stated that seven single men and three married men refused to walk one mile 35 chains to work at Isleworth on August 14. This walk was made necessary by a breakdown with the motor-lorry. All the other men in the lorry walked on to their work; those who refused arrived with the lorry at 2.30 p.m. Two of the men had given trouble on previous occasions, and had been warned. It was stated by the county clerk that the wages for the day in question had been paid to the offenders before word of the occurrence was received, and that they were fortunate that action was not taken against them for taking the money under false pretences. The committee decided that the offenders should lose four days' work, and that the case of one, who was reported to bo a returned soldier partially disabled, bo further investigated.
