AMATEUR BILLIARDS.

AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIP. KNOWLES DEFEATS SATGHELL. The Auckland provincial amateur billiards championship for tho Billiards, Ltd.. Shield opened last evening at Messrs. Billiards, Ltd., showroom, the contestants being J. E. Knowles and A. Satchell, who were, making their first appearance in championship games. Both players found match conditions rather strange and took a little time to settle down to their usual game. Knowles had fhe better of the opening etages and scored consistently without making any breaks of note and passed the century mark with over 50 lead. He increased his lead further soon after by making an allround break of 40 and was playing with freedom. The run of the play did not favour Satchell, who invariably left good scoring positions for his opponent, who made good use of these opportunities. A further break of 29 gave Knowles a commanding lead, the scores being at this stage 353 to 17.5 in his favour. The balls continued to run safe for Satchell and with the positions left- for lum a more experienced player would have had great difficulty in scoring. Ivnowles had no difficulty in keeping his good lead and finished with an advantage of 231 points. The final scores were:—.T. E. Knowles, 500 (breaks of 40. 29 and 25): A. Satchell, 269 (breaks of 21 and 20). G. Adams will play 11. lerry this evening.
