HEAVY VEHICLES COLLIDE.
CASE OF MISFORTUNE. FINES ON COUNTRY DRIVERS. [from our own correspondent.] THAMES, Monday. A fine of 10s was imposed on Joseph Henry Sarjant, of Netherton, by Mr. F. W. Plaits, S.M.. at' the Magistrate's Court on Friday for a technical breach of the motor regulations. Defendant drove a tractor attached to a hay press from Netherton to Pipiroa. He had no lights on either machine, anticipating that he would arrive at his destination before sunset. However, in crossing tho Pipiroa ferry, the hay press stuck in the mud and by the time gear had been procured and the machine pulled out, darkness had fallen. Sarjant took his machines along the Pipiroa road intending to put them into a near by paddock, but a Maori, Niko Ruatoto, who was driving a lorry, came up behind and collided violently with the hay press. The lorry was seriously damaged. It was stated that Ruatoto was dazzled by the lights of an approaching car and did not see the tractor or the hav press. The magistrate said the case was one of misfortune, but there had been a technical breach. He fined Ruatoto 10s and costs for not having his lorry equipped with two independent brakes.
